That is probably a $150k loan - maybe there was also a substantial downpayment. Here are a list of cities where the average house price is under $200k:

Did someone make you feel bad that you needed to create another "I'm better than you" post to compensate?

We refinanced in 2009, the loan was for $161,600 at 4.875%. The taxes are around $2,800/yr. We live in the Midwest in one of the 50 most populated cities in the US. The house is 1,700 sq ft. 3 bedrooms & 2 baths with a very small 1 car garage.
My area utility costs are well below the national average.
Only medical expense is my prescription for bc (I know I know bad Catholic).

snark snark snark in a happy sort of way: But what about the two kids? no glasses, braces, doctor visits? My neices and nephews have been keeping the medical system flush with money since they were born... it's like they've always got some expense that requires a 'doctor' of some sort? My 20 something nephew just reminded me about the time I baby sat him and he wouldn't take his "antibiotics" so I sat on him and held his nose so I could pour it down his throat... OK, I didn't really do that... but it was close.... actually, he started running around when he refused to take the 'pink stuff' and it turned into a fun crazy game of 'catch the Wild Child" and when I managed to drag him out from behind the couch we were both laughing so hard that I managed to get the 'pink stuff' into him between gasps for breath... Thankfully neither of us choked to death. It came up because he has antibiotics in pill form for a sinus infection and was wishing he could get the more fun 'pink stuff'. Hey, once you've put the 'pink stuff' down a cat's throat - getting it into a 6 year old is a peice of cake. edited for missing words.

And I wasn't going to say anything but people keep talking about jealousy. That's just ludicrous. May be if it was a different group, I could see it, but for YM??? What's there to be jealous about?? I agree that I don't think it is jealousy. I admit I was being snarky, but to me the post came across as trying to teach others how to live below their means. Aside from the low housing, the budget isn't exceptionally impressive given the income level. $1400/month on food/eating out is huge. $500/month on a car loan is kind of a YM no-no. I can't say you shouldn't spend that, because you can afford it, I am just not overly impressed. There are people on here with lower incomes managing to save over 50%, that I find impresive. Tbird- you impress me & inspire me. If I remember correctly, it was you that told me on the old boards how hard you worked to keep your house & how it was totally worth it. One of the reasons I haven't given up on keeping my house yet

I come here to learn. I'm certainly not talking about this around the water cooler or at parties. Geeez. I would love to hear from Windy, Miller, exLondonPat, illsomething CA. Anyone who I could grow from. I would never put them down for being better off or not going through hard times. Sometimes I just don't get this group.

It's not jealousy - in my case it more a need to point out the potential missing/overlooked bits. I see/hear lots of people overlook/miss bits... like my friend who was overjoyed that the mortgage (PI only!!) on the new house she was considering buying was the same amount as the mortgage (PITI and HOA fees) on her condo! Of course, she could afford it - it cost just as much as her then current place! Wooo Hooo!! I became a wet blanket when I asked about the HOA fees on the new place and then when I realized she was comparing PI to PITI and HOA fees - I asked how much in Property Taxes and Insurance she'd have to pay every month... I like to think I'm very colorful and bright wet blanket and not a cold grey heavy wet blanket - but my perceptions may be wrong.

Maybe jealousy is not the right word and I don't know what the right word is. There is nothing constructive or helpful in some of the comments that have been made.

I don't think it was anyone's intent to put you down. People are just being honest - you make good money & are being smart with it, those numbers just don't happen to be realistic for many on here. Also, I really don't think anyone is bothered that you haven't gone through hard times - frankly, I don't know your backstory, so I can't judge how hard your life was at all. I can't be bitter about someone leading an easier life than me or earning more money, I made choices that led me down my path & you made choices that took you down your path. Some of it might come down to luck, but most of where you are in life is due to choices you have made & you have obviously made some good choices.

Mrs. Dinero, I think your budget is a good example of how low housing and transportation costs (combined with built in retirement savings - IRAs for you) can provide middle-class dual earner households with a lot of disposable income.
Do you have a reason for not putting away some more money for investment? It looks like you are expecting the majority of your retirement income to be replaced through a mix of SS and your DH's government pension. Is that correct?
I think budgets say a lot about the things that are important to us. Are there any goals that your discretionary income can help you reach? We love to travel, and we budget about $20,000 a year for that. It might not make sense to other people, but it gives us experiences that we wouldn't trade for anything. Do you have any goals or desires that you might want to shift your spending to rather than where your discretionary goes now. You should feel empowered to really think about things that might give you more satisfaction than just normal budget line expenses.

Good place in my heart that is. It's just not coming out right. Anyway, for fun I think everyone should post their budgets and see what reaction you get. Let me tell you how fun it is. Stats45 - We max out 2 roths, get our matches on thrift and 401a. Put a little in a 403b, I have a little pension and he's will be around 50% of his last 3 salaries. We could put more in but things do come up and I would like to have more disposable income around for that.

Been there, done that. Got ripped to shreds the first time, very few comments the second. My personal life had changed by the second posting & there really wasn't much left to cut, so I don't think people had much to offer. I think what might have irked people about your post is most of the people post here with questions & asking for input. Your post came across more as bragging or preaching, not saying that was your intention, but just how it came across. Which, then led to the response of people saying "so what, it doesn't help me". I don't know, I'm sorry if you got your feelings hurt. If I can get my numbers together, then I will post my budget so you can all tear me apart

Mrs D - I agree there are things to learn from other people. Phil has taught me so much and he is the reason we have any retirement beyong my 401k (which means my DH actually has some retirement). I don't think you actually have to throw your budget out there numbers in all to be inspiring or helpful.

Muttleynfelix - I disagree. I would like to see detailed budgets of others who have more income than expenses. I am interested in that. I'm sure others would be too.

This response is the same issue that usually prevents me from posting my information. This forum is great if someone is struggling and asking for advice but if you are posting from a comfortable place to say how you are doing it, you get a lot of angry responses. I wish the board would be more supportive of success stories because I learn a lot from them. I am sure I can't be the only person that starts feeling comfortable and lets expenses creep up, so I expect there are more than me that enjoyed looking at your numbers.
ETA I think I will go ahead and post mine to support your post, hopefully I won't get bashed too badly.

I got my ass handed to me the first time I posted my budget in 2004. My income went from 130K to pretty much nothing when my husband left us and I was trying to make it work. LOL I did it though....well, it's an ongoing process I guess. There are always other setbacks just waiting around the corner.

I have lurked for a long time and I think that the reason that people are making comments is because a lot of the posts (including mine) come from a place that the bottom fell out of our financial lives.
so kudos to you that everything is great, but it does come off like Braggy Bragerton
Lena, I always thought you were way snarky but Karma to you for how you worded it. Some people have more battle scars than others and deserve the praise when they turn their life around.

That is just 100% false statement. Even on here, in only a few month there have been plenty of posts from people reaching milestones of any kind and nothing but "cograts", "great job", "we are happy for you" followed those kind of posts.
There were also posts on old YM from people who achieved their goals and got great responses.
YM is plenty supportive when there is something to support.
