treatment? for what, and for whom, may I ask?
dare I ask what the problem is with the DREAM Act? this needs to pass too, IMHO, but I'll take one at a time.

Booyah! Equal Rights might ACTUALLY be achievable. ;D But I doubt it. The problem is...you don't have a right to serve in the military.

I'm glad the law is on its way out. It's not the U.S. Government's place to tell a person they have to hide something so fundamental as their sexual preference, regardless of the circumstances. Having served in the Marine Corps, both in a civilian setting and in a combat zone, I don't believe that effeminate men will be lining up to join the military (well, they'll probably line up to join the Navy and the Air Force). Service members who were gay before will, for the most part, be the same people they were when DADT was still in effect. The last thing most of gays will want to do is ostracize themselves, and the quickest way to do that will be to openly define themselves based on their sexuality. So I believe, at least in the case of the Marines, that they'll stay Marines first and foremost.

God did not make any mistakes about gender. um....so why is your way correct? because it's your way? what about those atheists that don't believe in your god, are they wrong, regardless of which way they lean? how about those infertile hetero couples, are they wrong too?

I am so happy to hear that DADT has been repealed! My husband is in the military and he already knows many gay people that are serving. Many of the people in his unit knows and don't give a hoot.
Blue-and as always, you scare me with some of your comments.

I have very mixed feelings about Repealing Don't Ask Don't Tell and think it is going to be a very daunting task for the military to implement. But could cause some real serious morale and unit cohesion issues.
But let's see how the Implementation Tasks move along and then revisit it

The military did surveys hoping they could find some issue with morale and none was found, one of the reasons why they signed on to appeal it. It is a HORRIBLE law to have in place as an American no matter what you believe about the gay lifestyle.

I could be wrong but didnt Clinton put DADT in place because gays were being bullied in the military? It wasnt to discriminate but actually protect the gays from harm. That said, it is 2010 and society is more accepting overall so this is a good thing.
I will say I feel its a bad time for gays to be screaming about their "rights." We're in a war and many cant pay their bills. The last thing I care about is who you want to marry or come out to...just saying. The straights arent off with your heads because you love someone of the same sex. You dont go to jail for being gay. Straights dont make you sit in the back of the bus or drink out of a different water fountain for who you are.
What Im saying is, the gay community dosent have bad like others throughout history did... So I would appreciate it if they would put this on the backburner for a few years...lets worry about this nonsense when our troops come home, we all have a job and gas in the tank.
ETA from Wiki: Gay personnel were often the target of various types of harassment by their comrades, intended to compel them to resign or confess to investigators.[citation needed] An infamous version of this harassment was called a blanket party; at night several servicemembers would restrain their victim in their bunk with a blanket or sheet, and then beat the victim.[citation needed] At times beatings of gay personnel were severe and occasionally even fatal, as in the case of Allen R. Schindler, Jr.. In defense of his DADT policy, President Clinton cited U.S. Navy Radioman Third Class Schindler, brutally murdered by shipmate Terry M. Helvey (with the aid of an accomplice), leaving a "nearly-unrecognizable corpse".[13] DADT has officially prohibited such behavior, but harassment continues.[14]

To discriminate against another is just wrong. It has been done in ancient history, it has been done in recent history, it has even been the policy of our local governments and even our national government. When prejudice and descrimination becomes the policy of our governments , that goes way beyond the prejuduces and descriminations of individuals toward one another. When one can't depend on protection of discriminations by your government and actually your government condones the discrimination, then all hope is gone and it becomes a abomination. To descriminate because of sexual orienttion is just stupid and it as been proved around the world in military forces as diverse as one can have diversity , it does not effect the performance of the forces when the training , education and military dicipline is there and there is the will to succeed in the task given , and I am sure the US military, the strongest, the best in the world will be more then capable of making this long needed change in our policy as smooth and effective as they do now with all the tasks given them.

Anyone want to bet that once they come out, those in charge put the gays in the most dangerous assignments?
God doesn't make gender mistakes, but there are a bunch of confused (sick) people out there.

No public displays of affection. No separate bathrooms. No harassment and no special treatment. As the U.S. military begins to map out how it will implement the new edict allowing gays to serve openly, the first order of business is drafting the regulations. The rule changes under discussion won't dictate how troops feel about the change, but will strictly enforce how they act on it. From small wording tweaks and training programs to more complex questions about benefits and religion, the proposed guidelines demand that gays and lesbians be treated just like any other soldier, sailor, airman or marine. But they also leave the door open for some flexibility in room assignments or other instances when commanders believe it's needed to maintain order and discipline in their units. Defense officials said Monday that they still don't know how long it will take before the Pentagon completes its implementation plan and certifies the change will not damage combat readiness. Once certified, the implementation would begin 60 days later. The report, however, provides a fairly detailed preview of what troops and the American public can expect, once the new rules are in place. And it puts the heaviest burden on commanders, who will have to walk a fine line between enforcing the updated code of military conduct and recognizing when they may need to make some concessions. The plans call for strict and immediate action when the new rules are violated. But there is also an emphasis on educating troops who are having problems. For example, in a series of vignettes listed in the report, the first course of action is often counseling. Defense Secretary Robert Gates has said the military will not drag out the implementation process, but it will move carefully and deliberately. Yes he does BlueRobin - hermaphrodites. He doesn't make sexual orientation mistakes either. And yes, there are a bunch of confused (uneducated) people out there.

I think the army and marines are more open than people give them credit for. My DH is active duty army in a combat arms MOS. While he doesn't care about someone's sexual orientation, neither of us see gay men in the infantry, artillery, armor, and cavalry coming out. And the ones that do come out aren't going to be wearing lipstick and requesting to wear the ladies dress uniforms at formal events. I don't think it will ever really be a big deal. Sure incidents are bound to happen here and there, but overall I think this will be an easier transition than people are projecting.

As I said at the old zone, certain branches of service / branches..I am thinking combat arms..especially infrantry , and since all members of , are considered rifleman first , no matter their MOS, the Marine Corps recruits , are especially influenced by their basic and advcanced basic {AIT}instructors as they are immersed in the culture of the branch.. that which so effectively makes them so good at what they do..and if the instructers have this idea on Gays in the military, I am suggesting that attitude will be passed on to the recruits and since the influence of the DI is so ingrained in the Marines, really make it's mark in their mind set. So much more then the Army and other branches. Possible these Marine instructors are going to have a bit more time spent on understanding the new direction. For some, it might mean they ask out of their assignments, just go back to their units as non coms. For a few , if they have time in, and don't like the new policy, they might ask , if qualified, for retirement. I could be wrong with my assessment but I am aware of the special relationship of the Marine DI and his underlings, or at least I think I am aware. Possible I am all wrong regarding this relationship, if so , correct me. I am going by experience of being with older Marines, most retired or long out of active duty. Years after their recruit training and their ability to remember their DI's by name, deed and occasionally when meeting up with them in their tours of duty , how there still was recogntion once it was explained to all, who and what was what. This was not he case with most of the Army veterans, whether retired or just out of service. Personally I do remember one Master Sgt at basic but he was the first seargeant with little interaction with new recruits but he had all the charateristics with Bettle Baileys top seargeant, from girth, strength and demeanor but as for my drill instructors, can't remember one name.

Marines set to lead the way with implementation of DADT repeal 12/24/2010 By Cpl. Scott Schmidt, Headquarters Marine Corps
ARLINGTON, Va. — President Barack Obama may have signed a new law Dec. 22 that allows gay service members to serve openly, but no change will take effect until the Defense Department issues implementation guidance, Marine officials said.
According to a new Marine Corps-wide message from the commandant, Gen James Amos, the Corps “will implement the new policy in accordance with specific directions and guidance from our chain of command.”
Such guidance is now being worked out.
The message reiterates that, though Title 10 U.S. Code 654 has been repealed, changes have not yet been implemented and thus, “It remains DoD policy not to ask service members or recruit applicants about their sexual orientation.”
Labeled by the American press as an advocate against repealing “don’t ask, don’t tell,” Commandant of the Marine Corps, Gen. James Amos immediately acknowledged the repeal and said the Corps would lead the way in it’s implementation.
“Above all else, we are loyal to the Constitution, our Commander in Chief, Congress, our chain of command and the American people,” Amos said in a written statement. “The Marine Corps will step out smartly to faithfully implement this new policy. I, and the sergeant major of the Marine Corps, will personally lead this effort.”
The new message applies to the Marine Corps total force.

Newsflash: We don't live in a theocracy, robin. Who cares what God did or didn't do. The fact is, gays exist, and they should be able to serve like anyone else. I would suggest dealing with your own obvious issues before worrying about what the gays are doing.

I don't have a problem with the cartoon to tell the truth...in a way a political type and they are there for a reason.. Back in the day a lot of things wee done that today would not be tolerated and just not lip service would be paid to the incidents. Think lynching, keeping others fom exercising their right to vote becasuse of the color of their skin, being made to ride in back of the bus, trains, seperate rest rooms, no eating in certain restaurants, not able to get a hotel room because on ones race, unable to move into a certain neighborhood, being kept out by collusion of residents, real estate people , I can go on forever and fill these pages.. There were also a time the majority thought of others who life style were different then the norm in terms that for most of us are not used today, homo, fairy, fruit case , queer and on and on.. Times change . most of us change with it. Those that don't ..their loss.
