With the boards going bye-bye, and the annoucement that all the old stuff would be gone, I feel that the sacred Laws of Humanistics need to be moved here for safekeeping. I figured the general board was appropriate, since they're applicable to all phases of life The First Law: Most people are stupid. Corollary to the First Law: Able-bodied doesn't mean able-brained. The Second Law: Most people don't realize that the first law applies to them. Corollary to the Second Law: If you know you're subject to the First Law, you're ahead of the game. The Third Law: Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day. Give a man a soapbox and he'll talk until he proves he's subject to the first law of humanistics. The Fourth Law: Most people think they get smarter and wiser as they age. In reality, they just prove themselves subject to the Second Law of Humanistics more often. Corollary to the Fourth Law: Beauty is fleeting. Stupid lasts forever. The Fifth Law: The greater the number of people in a group, the dumber their ideas. The Sixth Law (also known as the Limerick Law): Some people are full of hot air If you're one, do not despair If you talk loud enough And you use enough fluff People will believe you're Voltaire

There is a LOT of valuable knowledge that is going to evaporate, and I can totally see myself spending the next 2 weeks trying to find and save a lot of pages.

The Laws of Humanistics
This list hasn't grown any in the last couple years....Time for more, isn't it J?

It would be nice if they'd just lock the boards from posting but leave it up for reference

J are you the person who brought the Laws of Huministics to MSN? I honestly can't remember who introduced them to us, but if it was you...you are my hero!

J, I read the laws of humanistics on YM today. My first thought was do think most of us posters are stupid? I'm smart, right? Right?

Netscapenavigator, i've thought about that too. There is a LOT of valuable knowledge that will disappear forever once the boards are shut down. If you don't mind my asking, what piece of software would you use? I'm tempted to browse them and pluck a few favorite threads, but going page by page will be rough to say the least.

Thank you. I'll keep that one in mind.
It may be better for me to just cherry pick. Anything about rental properties financing and stuff is what I care about. Not sure I need all the tipping threads.

I have them saved on my work computer. I think the version I have saved is different than what is posted here. I'll be sure to submit that when I get back to work next year.

Totally Hey......... shouldn't that be a regular smiley?! There were two questions and only one answer. Figure that one out and you'll reach the first level of Humanistic Enlightenment <<zenning out over here>>

Every time I share TLOH with others, someone inevitably takes offense even though I tell them it's tongue-in-cheeky in advance.

If they take offense, calmly point out the Second Law of Humanistics to them

Oh, I have--in writing. It was all spelled out. Still... We always end up at the First Law Always. No one found the humor in it. Not a single person.
I even had one Genius of the First Law go to great lengths to explain how wrong TLOH were and how much of a misanthrope I was for writing them.
Nevermind that I never claimed to be the writer of TLOH and that I fully disclosed that TLOH was from another message board.
She, a humanities major as she enjoyed pointing out, was determined to school me by explaining that there was no such Laws in existence in her textbooks therefore they don't exist and that they were all wrong.
How can something be wrong if it doesn't exist?
"It's a joke" I wrote back.
She followed by a long diatribe about....much ado about nothing.
It was quite humorous in its own right because, well, she fully proved herself quite an exceptional follower of Law number one.

Send her over this way. I'll straighten her out. And she's really proving the Third Law

An analogy: What you know is like an island. What you don't know is like the sea. What you know you don't know is like the shoreline of your island. The more you know, the more you realize you don't know.
I have always felt this explains teenagers well.

I know the first two laws but not the rest. Assuming they are not made up, may I suggest a seventh law?
That people realize that April 1 is a day that is dedicated to pranks. People always forget, despite the fact that April 1, just like Jan 1 or July 4 or Dec 25, actually happens once every year.
