I need to give a couple of area rugs a good cleaning. And it seems I might need to do so on a regular basis in the foreseeable future.
I'm thinking about getting some kind of carpet cleaner machine. Anyone got such a thing? I want one that is economical and works well. As I said I only have a couple of area rugs to clean so I don't need a real heavy duty machine.

Later, I have a Bissel ProHeat. It works pretty good, but it is heavy IMHO. You have to make sure you clean it good or it does get a mildew smell.
For area rugs you could probably get the Green Machine or the Bissel Spot cleaner. I have never had area rugs so I am not sure how you would clean them.

DD just bought the Rug Doctor. It was more expensive, heavier, but does a better job than my upright cleaner. However, my carpets don't really get that dirty and the upright works fine, for me.

Later, it's the Hoover Steam Vac, Wide Path. I've had it for years and like it better than any I've had before. You can apply cleaning solution, then switch it to rinse. It's not much bigger than my upright vac.

How big are your rugs?
Could you take them to the dry cleaners once a year and regularly vacuum them?
Is your puppy causing the problem?

We just rented a Bissel at Lowe's. It did a really good job on our carpet (which was in horrible shape). I think the cost was about 30 dollars & we paid 20 for the cleaning solution (it came out to 50 something). I think next time we will probably buy one of them (the professional type). I think that the advantage of the professional one's is that large vat of water so you don't spend so much time filling & emptying.

Ya, it's Charlie. One rug is 10 by 12 and the other is 4 by 6. I can't spot clean cause I don't know where so the rugs get a good cleaning this weekend.

I have one of these Green Machine or the Bissel Spot cleaner. I'd have to dig it out of the back of a closet to be sure which one. I don't recommend it- it doesn't work on pet stains and uses a lot of cleaning solution. It also has a tendency to leave a circular pattern on the rug.

Concerning pet stains. I'm moving to another house that has nice carpets. Someone told me that I should have it "scotch guarded" by a professional rug company. Does this work? I keep the dogs in the basement (unfinished) when I'm at work but accidents do happen.

I'd be careful about "Scotch garding" anything. The stuff can be really hard on the respiratory system. I have asthma, controlled, that goes nuts around the stuff. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scotchgard

later, I got my DD the Hoover Steamvac Silver. It's an upright but lighter & a little smaller than the heavy duty cleaning machines, so it might be better for your small carpet area cleaning.

MW that does sound like the type of thing I am looking for. You know why they make puppies so cute don't you? So you don't kill them while you are house training them!

I had a bad experience with Wilson Leather Preservative many years ago.

We have the Bissel Pet Spot Bot. I haven't bought the fancy pet odor removel carpet cleaner, I use a couple tbps of vingear throw in with regular carpet shampoo.
It's not super heavy or bulky, so it's easy to store. I also like it because I can set it right on the stain press either "Set in" or "Surface" stain and it will go all by itself requring no effort from me whatsoever.
I have found it works the best if I get to the spot ASAP, but it does a good job of getting older stains out as well.
Got mine for $75 on ebay.
