If she was introduced to the world as Catherine, then calling her Catherine makes sense. Trying to call her Catherine now is stupid IMO.

No it isn't stupid at all. Kate was what her friends called her not that she necessarily went out and stated she wanted to be known as Kate. Just like my name, I have a Nick but introduce myself with my full name doesn't stop others from bastardizing it.
