Young Canadian Robbers Hit Super 8 Motel Using…a Musket Posted on December 30, 2010 at 6:39am by Scott Baker Print » Email »
CBC:
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary released a video Wednesday that shows two youths or young men trying to use an unusual weapon — a musket — in an unsuccessful robbery attempt at a St. John’s motel.
Security video from the Super 8 Motel on Higgins Line shows the pair walking into the foyer of the motel, one of them brandishing a musket.
Police said the attempted robbery occurred just before 6 p.m. on Saturday.
The RNC said the pair demanded cash from the clerk before leaving.
One suspect is described as being five feet tall and the other five foot four inches tall. The former was also described as weighing 110 pounds, having dirty blond hair, a light complexion and “possibly acne on his face.”

"Journalists" are notoriously ignorant of firearm types, calibers, compositions, etc. I wonder if this weapon was truly a musket, or if the writer was trying to describe a more modern muzzleloader instead.

Iowa is trying to pass a law which permits the visible carrying of firearms anywhere, with no restrictions - as long as you have a permit. That'll work great in bars and schools. Good thing I don't live in Iowa where every gun totin' Wyat Earp will feel the need to be intimidating.

Many states have had open carry for years but most people did not use it except for hunting. The concealed is a new thing and states are jumping on board fast. I am an NRA member and I have problems with the concealed idea.

Get ready to bang your head against a wall. There is a growing problem of people frantically calling the police when they see someone with a gun on their belt, even when if it's a cop and their badge is clearly visible next to the gun. Turns out it happens a lot in MA.
If I was looking to start a fight with someone, I would NOT pick the person carrying a firearm. I would also most likely pick a different bar to start the fight.

I would look for bar/ resturants that allowed concealed carry or open carry to take my family to.Stats show people that are allowed to carry make a safer enviroment.

As a former bartender, the last thing I'd want with a bunch of drunks with attitude would be guns. It's a recipe for disaster.

What we need it a constitutional amendment requiring every person over the age of 16 to be armed at all times. The first class in every high school should be weapons cleaning and marksmanship. Crime rates would drop so fast it it would be amazing. Probably reduce the idiot count in this country by a considerable amount as well. In Sweden every home has a military weapon in the closet and it's one of the safest countries to live in the world.

When a woman does it, she becomes a serving wench. Hey! Don't get angry at me. I'm just telling you the history of mixology. ;D This could account for why so many modern day women refused to, or were at least resistance to learning the job.

Pardon me Stay Put, but considering that there was no one else working in the bar, no waitress, no barback, no 2nd bartender, when I was, I will continue to call myself the Bartender. And the cute little certificate I got for finishing Bartending school says I am. So while you "men" may think a female bartender is just some "serving wench", becareful telling them that, you just might not get another beer or drink served to you or even better, find it artfully placed in your lap in a way that isn't very enjoyable.

steff, I'll call you anything that you want. Again, I was merely stating the history of mixology. If, for politically correct reasons, they started calling women "bartenders", so be it. I don't care one way or the other. However, you should be just as accepting if someone refers to you by the historically accurate name for women in the job. IMHO

Sorry, didn't realize you still lived in the past and aren't willing to see women as more than someone to serve you. Now I know.
And I'll continue to remind you that my bartending license, certificate, and job description was 'Bartender", not "serving wench". ;D

From what found..there is a definition of a wench..not really that nice. A definition of, nothing about a serving wench in the modern, a mention of medieval and as far as bar tender , well, "bar·tend·er (bärtndr) n. One who mixes and serves alcoholic drinks at a bar. Also called barkeeper" And no difference mentioned as to the gender, so I guess any one who serves and mixes, male or female are considered in todays vernacular a bartender. What ever a serving wench was , it is no more and to be called a Wench ..I believe if in close proximity of the one so using that term, to be punched out by the one so addressed would and should be the result , as well as a few kicks as the guilty party was lying on the floor by any and all who are present and want to get a few in. Well deserved I believe.

You assume too much. I simply gave you the history of mixology, and correct titles for the position, and made absolutely no assertions as to my own belief system concerning this or anything else. I also stated that if someone were to come into your establishment (not me) and refer to you as "serving wench", they would not necessarily be insulting nor degrading you, but rather utilizing the accurate title for the sexed position. If you are still hung up on a title, than that is more telling of your personality than anything about mine. Again, I am not attacking nor insulting you. I was merely giving you the history of the job. If it really bothers your sensitivities, I would suggest learning another position that doesn't have a title so offensive to you.

serving wench is not defined , a old out of date phrase, bar keep, bar tender is the current title of one who mixes and serves drinks from the bar and as I said it seems to be gender neutral.

I'm not worried about picking a fight with a person with a gun. I'm worried about people with guns picking a fight with me. I really don't like the idea of people visibly flaunting their weapons so they can flash it whenever there's a common, everyday dispute over something. The issue is whether people will feel intimidated to speak up when they've been wronged by someone wearing a gun on their hip. At least when guns were kept concealed, the intimidation factor didn't kick in from the outset, and the gun carriers knew that people couldn't see it. Having it right there in the open makes me wonder if their bravery won't increase by leaps and bounds, thinking, "I have a gun and they don't, so I'll just do what I want."
Really? You mean we should rewind the clock back to 1860? Shootouts at high noon might be amusing to see, but I certainly wouldn't want to be caught in the crossfire. Perhaps you should do some reading on the amount of crime in the mining towns of the Western US where everyone had a gun. It wasn't pretty.
But here's what I find hysterical. The conservatives are all up in arms (pardon the pun) about a mandate for all Americans to buy health insurance, but you're for a mandate that requires all citizens to buy a gun? In other words, you have no problem forcing Americans to buy something that kills, but are ferociously against forcing Americans to buy something that saves lives. Interesting dichotomy you have going there.
I have never heard anyone ever refer to a woman behind the bar or even serving drinks referred to as a "serving wench." Ever. Where do you normally do your drinking? "Ye Olde Tavern and Grille?"

I know many a liberal who are for the right to bear arms. IMO with that right comes big responsibilities esecially if children are around. I never thought we needed more laws. They only affect the law biding people. The bad guys do not obey the laws so new laws would not affect them. I believe if a child gets your gun and shoots themselves or another person than the gun owner should be charged. There is no way a child should be able to acess a loaded gun. I hate it when people paint with a broad brush like saying all liberals are anti guns. I am sure not all conservatives were pleased with Bush jr either.

This is where the saying "an armed society is a polite society" came from. When people are armed, there are far fewer "everyday disputes" because people think twice about getting into a pointless spat when there are guns around, instead of shooting their mouths off with impunity like many do now...
