I have a question about filing an amended return. Bit of a long story, I'll try to keep it short.
For the 2009 tax year, I filed as single and was eligible to take the Making Work Pay credit but did not. For 2010, I filed married (jointly) and was eligible to take the credit for both myself and my wife (and took it).
What happened, as I was filling out our joint return for 2010 I noticed on my wife's return from 2009 that she got the Making Work Pay credit (she had an accountant do her return, I did mine myself). At the time we were both single, no dependants, and made almost the exact same amount ( in 2009).
Since I didnt take the credit but was eligible, can I file an amended return for 2009 and claim the credit?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Be sure the IRS didn't correct your 2009 return and give you the credit. That was what they attempted to do for people who forgot to take the credit. If you aren't sure, you can request a free copy of a transcript of your 2009 return. There may be a place on the IRS web site [ www.irs.gov] that allows you determine whether you got the credit in 2009 but, if there is, I couldn't find it.

OK, I checked my records and it turns out that the IRS did correct it and gave me the credit.
Thanks again.

Turns out, d, that so many people were making errors with regard to the credit that the IRS instituted a procedure to automatically check each return. They also caught some people claiming it who weren't entitled.
