Authorities at Camp Lejeune began investigating the 67-year-old Hamilton after his picture showed up in the Jacksonville Daily News. Hamilton was a speaker at a Vietnam veteran ceremony where he was dressed in a Marine colonel’s uniform decorated with four Silver Stars and eight Purple Hearts.
The federal jury took about an hour to reach its decision of guilty on all four counts. ncreview.org/nc-news/fake-colonel-found-guilty-as-charged/3304

I attended a seminar several years ago at the USMC Memorial Club and the presenter was Mitchell Paige USMC Col(ret) and a MOH recipient who told us about all the phonies who were wearing the MOH that they purchased online...one I recall was woman who ran for congress in Ohio but she forgot to check her military history on the MOH because only one woman was awarded the MOH and she earned it as a nurse during the Civil War but didn't receive it until years later.

Well if she was a civil war vet that would put her at roughly 180 years old - I bet she looked like hell lol. You might be shocked to learn how many claimed to be MOH awardees ...I just don't understand why except for political reasons I guess. One guy was a city official in CA who claimed to have been awarded the MOH in Korea in 1953 when he was 16 years old. www.mishalov.com/False_MoH_Recipients.html

My wonderful DH has never earned a purple heart (thank goodness), but he does have 5 or 6 air medals - each one represents 20 combat missions in Iraq.

4 silver stars and 8 purple hearts is kind of overdoing it lol. This is my area of obsessive-compulsiveness lol - when I went into our orderly room about two months ago and saw an Airman there with his ribbons and nametape switched to opposite sides of his shirt I just went ballistic. So this young man was helping customers (military members) all day long and at 3:00 in the afternoon I notice his bling-bling (in the parlance of our times) is backwards on his shirt? He probably talked to 30 people, not to mention went to lunch somewhere, and not one person noticed and said "Hey dude, your shirt is all jacked up so if you could take 2 minutes to fix it before walking all around base looking like an idiot that would be great." So me and the shirt decide to do an open ranks for the whole Squadron, haha, and the shirt has his ribbons all jacked up before we even go out there. So we get the shirt all fixed up and go do our open ranks, and honestly about 90% of the folks look pretty good. The other 10% I guess have some reading comprehension issues, or maybe they forgot about a deployment where they lived in a whole nother country for several months or something...because it was pitiful. It's really not that hard nowadays, you just log onto the vMPF and print out your "awards and decorations" page, and stand in front of a mirror while holding up that printout of your medals and when you look like the picture you're good to go. It really isn't as hard as brain surgery or building a nuclear bomb, it's just putting the right ribbons on the ribbon bar and then putting the ribbon bar on the right side of your shirt for cripes sakes. Anyway, my rant is over. I'm sure this dude knew what he earned and also knew what he was wearing. When I saw my younger cousin at my grandfathers funeral, he was wearing an honor guard sash on his uniform and I asked him what it was, he said "I don't know, it just looks good though so I wore it." I said go take that crap off, your grandfather doesn't care how cool your uniform looks. He did take it off, and he looked pretty dapper without it, just wearing what he had earned and not the stuff that looked pretty. Anyway, obviously I'm pretty anal about the whole deal, but for cripes sakes those are the ribbons that you've earned so you should be proud of your own personel set and not add junk to make it look better - in my humble opinion as always lol. no more but definitly no less
