Trump is now promising to reinstate the student loans that the Biden admin forgave. For all the people out there with student debt who didn’t bother to vote - or who voted for Trump because of inflation - congratulations. Trump has shown he really doesn’t like smart college educated nerds - so it makes sense he would screw them over. They don't want anyone to be educated, except for those that can buy a good education outright. Having education funding going back to the states doesn't seem completely awful until you start.to think of the ramifications. If I had a special needs/ Neuro divergent kid in the public school system I would be terrified. I'd also probably resign myself to working more jobs so I had more money to buy support and services. I wouldn't be surprised if institutions became the go to option again.

More chaos: “On January 20th, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% Tariff on ALL products coming into the United States, and its ridiculous Open Borders,” Trump posted on his Truth Social platform. “This Tariff will remain in effect until such time as Drugs, in particular Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country!” That's a huge opening shot across the bow salvo to our border countries. Putting them on notice Trump is serious on the drugs and illegal crossings. The ball will be in their court. Let's see what they do with it. If you buy Trump's assertion that manufacturers, not the consumer, will pay the tariff, the manufacturers will become unprofitable. And then the manufacturers in Mexico will lay off workers and/or close their plants. Employees are out of work. Not being able to support oneself or a family is a major push factor for people to try to cross the border. See how that works, rip? Sorry to keep harping on our lack of critical thinking skills, but this is a prime example.

My company actually has a lot of facilities in other countries. I don't know how all of this is going to affect us. We buy components from China, then we design and do a lot of NPI and high dollar, more complicated/regulated production here. Once a line becomes more turnkey or is a high volume item we may transfer it to one of the overseas facilities where there is plenty of labor. Part of it is so we don't pay export fees for selling to those countries...but I'm not sure if what we build in other countries is considered an import when it comes back to us (like we'll build the circuit boards in Thailand then use the boards in assemblies in the US).
The next few years are going to be anything but boring.

I’ve told this story before, but in 2017 when Trump instituted broad tariffs we went through every single component to identify which we imported. We also had our domestic suppliers go through all their components (most were doing that already, but we did have a few niche suppliers that needed some help). When we figured out how much the tariffs would cost us, we raised prices by double the increase. We had roughly 50% margins, and were mandated to keep 50% margins-so we couldn’t raise prices by the amount of the increase - our margins would have gone down.
We bought from suppliers who probably did the same thing, and then sold to distributors who also did the same thing, and then retailers. Granted some of their margins were as low as 20%, so they didn’t have to double it. But there was mark-up at every turn. So a nickel tariff turned into a 50 cent price increase to the consumer.
We did have a few customers that demanded we detail out each and every component and only pass along the tariff - but we pretty much told them they did not have the right to our formulas and supplier lists. They had a ton of suppliers - there was no way they could verify every component of every supplier. Although we did give them a few discounts and made up that margin loss at other customers. Either way - we weren’t going to take it in the shorts. And no way we were going to tell the street we passed along the penny profit loss, but not the margin loss.
Multiply that by literally every single thing you buy.

You expect Trump and the MAG idiots to do math? To actually understand how corporations work? Facts no longer matter. It is all about feelings. So, because they feel they were better under Trump, that is all that matters. Milk could double in price and the complaining will be less than if it increased by 50 cents under a Democrat. Can’t wait for gas to go under $2/gallon. Although, putting a 25% tariff on everything from Canada would include the oil we import to refine, and oil isn’t truly interchangeable, so not sure how that happens. But, since I am unable to understand Republican math, I must be the dumb one.

Which like all his easzee peszee solutions ignores reality.

I live in a red area that will no doubt mandate a Christian curriculum heavy on Bible studies. Not a lot of focus on college prep but colleges are just liberal hot beds.

What is really frightening is that children's minds are malleable. Many will have no choice on what is rammed down their throat in the public education system, and Project 2025 will have helped raise little christian nationalists.

Donald Trump has repeatedly said he could settle the war between Russia and Ukraine in one day if he’s elected president again. link President-elect Donald Trump’s soon-to-be national security adviser Mike Waltz has been weighing several proposals in recent days for ending the war between Russia and Ukraine, link Wonder if Trump will be making the decision in the next two weeks.

Well, some of the MAGA are upset with two of Trump’s recent picks. For the head of the NIH, he picked a doctor who was a pariah in the medical community back during Covid because he said masks or social distancing wasn’t useful and who said the vaccine wasn’t necessary. But the one that caused the most anger is a millionaire businessman as secretary of the Navy. I always thought military service was a requirement for any of the military secretaries, but apparently all you need to do is make a big ‘gift’ to Trump and you’re in. www.rawstory.com/trump-fans-deceived-navy-pick/Trump supporters (especially those in the military) are not pleased. Sorry, but what did ya’ll expect? You knew how he feels about the military.

Sounds like his non-existent health care plan.

I guess that means in the four years of his presidency that feckless f*ck got nothing done, and in the four years since he has forgotten pretty much everything he tried to insist he would do. Sounds like dementia to me, memory issues and all.

Yes, we have a vaccine that prevents cancer. An incredible accomplishment. Yet people refuse to vaccinate their children when recommended because of “morality”, and we have a nominee to head HHS who will actively try to denigrate vaccines. Health in the US will suffer, all because conservatives refuse to accept science

BTW, I've probably mentioned this before, but my Mom used to work for a dentist who was old enough to remember when there was no fluoride in the city water system. He witnessed the drop in tooth decay once fluoride was added, and he thought it was a blessing for his patients. Watch the big rise in tooth decay for the communities who drop using fluoride. Talking to you, Florida!

My DIL got grandson the vaccine for HPV and hubs and I got caught up on everything. If the mpox comes out we will get it too.
This poor country and its people are going to suffer in ways we cannot imagine the next 4 years. Kids will be indoctrinated into programs we don't want and people will lose jobs. I think we are likely to see loss of health care, closing of hospitals, and inflation so high it will leave many starving and even more homeless. But the very rich will reap what he sows. I'm not sure our country will survive this time as a democracy. I cannot believe that somehow all this was not rigged. It just seems to well orchestrated.
My husband said I'm getting too worried about things that have not happened yet and letting myself get stressed. Yes, he is correct.

I think that our country and the world will look different by the time we get rid of him, or if we get rid of him. And it will not be better. We will be 82 in 4 years if we still have our health care and SS, and DD has healthcare. Without it, could easily bankrupt us.
We saved as we went along in our lives and thought with help from those programs that we would have plenty to live on. We still will if they remain intact. I feel for those that are very poor and need all this and are barely hanging on now.
So for this day, going to try to put all this aside, going to be happy and enjoy our son and family and hope for the best but prepare for the worst.
