JD Vance Popularity Among Young Voters

Buried in the Harvard Youth Poll yesterday was an eye-popping stat about JD Vance. His favorable/unfavorable number among voters aged 18-30 is 18/46.

That’s right: He’s viewed favorably by 18 percent of young voters. 18 percent.

Let me put this in perspective for you: Elon University just released a North Carolina poll and in it, Mark Robinson’s favorable number among women was 27 percent.

Think about that. The guy who says the Holocaust was overblown and Hitler was great, who wants to own slaves, who was a frequenter of backroom porn video booths, and who bragged about banging his wife’s sister . . .

That guy was able to get to 27 percent favorable with women in North Carolina.

But JD Vance is stuck at 18 percent among people who are basically his same age.

Look, this Harvard poll did not test favorability ratings for the Taliban, or Vladimir Putin, or herpes. If they had, I’m sure all three would have been less popular than JD Vance.

But not by much.1

More context: Among young voters, Donald Trump’s favorability rating is 31 percent. Which means that almost half the people who like Donald Trump don’t like JD Vance.

Only the best, right Donold?  With as many messes as this guy has either made or stepped in, even before admitting that he made up the lies about Haitians in Springfield, and this is who Trump thinks both best helps him and is able to step in and run the country?  GOP better start hoping that all of their voters live to 120, because they seem to have little help coming in the future....

I don't think Trump uses the normal political calculus that everyone else does.

Picking a running mate who is popular is the way politicians think. Trump is always touting that he's a businessman, not a politician.

Picking a running mate who has qualities you lack, to create a more well rounded ticket would be normal political thinking - creating a team. Trump is not a team player - he must be top dog, which means everyone he surrounds himself with must be a bit lesser in some way - so that narcissistic Trump looks better in comparison. He also wants a running mate with no personality, no ideas of his own - not competition for Trump - someone more ornamental than useful.

Trump also seems to think his ideas are the best ever, simply because they are HIS ideas - he'd never admit picking Vance at random was a bad idea.

And finally, Trump likes to string loyal minions along, rewarding them with important titles if they sufficiently debase themselves for him. He's handing out prizes, not picking competent people.

Supposedly Don Jr and his brother talked Dad into picking JD.

Dad already liked Ivanka best. I have to imagine this makes him like her that much more.

Keep in mind that at the time Vance was selected, Trump was running against Biden, whose capacity seemed to be very diminished. They weren't worried about winning, but instead were trying to appeal to the manosphere, who were already in Trump's base.

Also, Trump has a weakness for anyone is is ‘famous.’ JD Vance was somewhat well known because of his best selling book, and Trump would have loved that. 

Quality or confidence doesn’t matter. Fame or infamy does.
