I’m with the banned.

There’s local hullabaloo with a few school board members wanting books removed from the high school library. They are self-proclaimed far right conservatives. They’ve been on the school board about a year, and their sole purpose in running was to “get biblical values back in the schools”.

The two board members don’t believe they are “banning books”. They won’t use the current board policy for challenging books. They just want a new policy that gives them unfettered opportunity to remove any book from any a school at will. Like walk by a shelf in the library and take the book without saying anything. That’s not an exaggeration—one of them started this hullabaloo with that exact action. Board member was shocked when he was told he wasn’t allowed to do that. The two board members who are proposing the new policy are confused that people disagree with them about it—they think direct board oversight of every piece of literature, media, verbal discussion is brilliant.

Anyhoo, at last night’s board meeting, one of the school district staff was presenting about a completely different topic. However, they wore this shirt. I love it. The two board members were annoyed.

In my county, there's a group getting books banned in the school district. The team kicker for me is these women are stirring up crap in a county some of them don't even live in and of those who do, none of their children go to public school. They've tried to get on the school board but they've been unsuccessful so far.

One of our neighboring libraries had a group agitating to get a bunch of books removed.

The library had an LGBTQ+ display, and the lead agitator checked out all the books, and refused to return them. Director said - fine, I will bill you for the 'lost' books, and buy replacements. (Good luck getting her to pay up, her DH was checking things out on his card instead!)

Then the lead agitator rounded up a bunch of her church friends, who don't even use the library or live in the service area, to mob the library board meetings and generally get in the way. The library had to move their meetings, because the tiny space couldn't hold the protest group (back story: this library burned to the ground 5 years ago and lost everything, was temporarily in a pottery shed while rebuilding - they *just* reopened in permanent quarters last month).

So far I haven't heard anything about our public library or the schools but there is a lot of ruckus state wise about parents being allowed to screen what is in libraries and to even get teachers fired if they read books in class the parents disprove of.

There was a push for a while to force classrooms to have cameras in them at all times that parents could log into to make sure teachers weren't teaching anything that might corrupt their little darlings. 

I am honestly surprised that one got shot down.

That is a bad idea on SO MANY levels.

P.S., I've got a Banned Book display up for the month. No sign, just a bunch of books on stands. There are quite a few empty stands right now. Need to fill them in with other banned/challenged titles.

I told DH the other day it's a bit rich to ban a book because of talking animals (Charlotte's Web) when you follow a book that has a burning talking bush in it.
