A University of Wisconsin-Whitewater gymnast was killed in shooting at off-campus apartment. Now a suspect is in custody Story by Dakin Andone, CNN • 1d • 3 min read It feels weird and scary that a school shooting and this shooting occurred so early in the school year This is less of a mystery than the school shooting in Georgia, but very sad to me just the same. Given this guy was twenty-three I think these shootings might be harder to stop then underage kids deciding to kill at school. www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/a-university-of-wisconsin-whitewater-gymnast-was-killed-in-shooting-at-off-campus-apartment-now-a-suspect-is-in-custody/ar-AA1pRCMJ?ocid=msedgntp&pc=DCTS&cvid=f2f3b121384442a183b7b7d9c77aeb38&ei=67Aman has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a University of Wisconsin-Whitewater gymnast this weekend in an off-campus apartment, days before the start of the fall semester. UW-Whitewater’s chancellor confirmed Kara Welsh’s death Friday in a message to the school community, describing her as a “standout member of the Warhawk gymnastics team.” The 21-year-old rising senior from Plainfield, Illinois, won the national title on the vault last year at the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association Championship and was majoring in business management, according to the school’s athletic department. The suspect was identified by police Tuesday as Chad T. Richards, 23, of Loves Park, Illinois. He faces charges of first-degree homicide, endangering safety by the use of a dangerous weapon and disorderly conduct while armed, according to Whitewater Police Chief Dan Meyer.Richards has been ordered held on a $1 million cash bond. He appeared virtually at a hearing Tuesday, when a judge added a condition that Richards – whose attorney confirmed he is a senior at UW-Whitewater studying communications – not have physical contact with the campus in the event he posts bond. Richards is allowed contact with the school through the phone or electronic communication, the judge said.Minutes of anger and stupidity with a gun, and now two lives are destroyed. Yet another promising young adult is dead. And what happens with a young man who stupidly destroyed his future because of his stupid anger? Whatever it was, I doubt this shooting was the right way to resolve it. What can be done about this? Would something like a Scared smart program work if everyone on campus had to learn about cases like these and possibly "meet" perps via video? Because who is going to want to hire this guy except perhaps someone like JD Vance? He's proved he is a hothead with a serious lack of judgment. Before school even starts. It feels like this year might be worse than preceding years.

It feels ironic he is studying communications. My ex has her PhD in Communication. When she was studying at the University of Washington, she would tell me about having to redirect undergraduate students to the Communications Department, which was in a totally different building.

I am confused by what you posted. Are there two different types of study - Communication and Communications?

Had no idea, so in other words it's not that ironic because he was studying media. But shouldn't studying media communications at least require some grounding in human interaction?

But shouldn't studying media communications at least require some grounding in human interaction? Question: "How do you most effectively set up and use cameras in a television news studio?" If you wanted to learn the answer, major in Communications. But yes, hopefully any course of study has some grounding in human interaction.

If it makes you feel any better, the man that dumped petrol on her and set her alight also had burns on 30% of his body. Even without knowing how severe those burns were, first or second degree instead of third degree, it is unlikely that he will survive. In the developed world, it is possible for a young person with that percentage of their body burned to survive. It may even be possible to survive burns on that much of your body in Nairobi, but not in Eldoret.

It feels like this year might be worse than preceding years. My Husband and my two kids graduated from this University. It is a well thought of university, but while my DD was there, the Chancellors husband was abusing students. She defended him, but eventually ended up resigining. Before that incident, DD's HS boyfriend was stalking her on campus. She was so traumatized by his behavior she ended up withdrawing from school for the semester. Her RA had called the (campus) police, and they responded. They told her she could file for a restraining order, but she did not initially choose to do it. When she went back to do it (after the Chancelor situation came to light), they had destroyed the records of the call. So, she was unable to file for a restraining order. They said he could not be in the same classroom as her, but they could not keep him off campus, or from being enrolled, so she was terrified to go to class b/c she never knew if she would run into him on campus. When she found out through friends that he had dropped out and left town, she relaxed enough to go back to class. The story in the local paper said the attack was particularly brutal if I understood it correctly. There were no details given. He was a wrestler, I don't know how good he was, they have a history of having some really good D3 athletes there.

As Haapai correctly predicted the man who set the Kenyan athlete on fire also died. Apparently, the argument was over land. www.msn.com/en-us/sports/other/man-accused-of-killing-olympic-athlete-rebecca-cheptegei-dies-from-burns/ar-AA1qiD42?ocid=msedgntp&pc=DCTS&cvid=3cd2001afe17417b9eb5afffae2ce638&ei=11Man accused of killing Olympic athlete Rebecca Cheptegei ‘dies from burns’
The former partner of the Ugandan Olympic athlete accused of her murder by setting her alight has died in hospital from burns sustained during the attack.
The athlete is due to be buried on Saturday in Uganda. She will be given a military burial. Top officials from both Kenya and Uganda are expected to attend the funeral.
A post-mortem examination on the body of Cheptegei is due to be carried at the hospital on Wednesday. Mr Cheptegei said the family hoped that the post-mortem would “help us to know what led to her death”.

i have been to that town. it is the last place on Earth that you would expect a shooting.
but i think you could say that about most of the school shootings, like Uvaldi.

Yes. To simplify, Communication is human interaction and Communications is media. Had no idea, so in other words it's not that ironic because he was studying media. But shouldn't studying media communications at least require some grounding in human interaction? seems to attract a lot of narcissists and sociopaths. so i am thinking that no. they just like the sound of their OWN voices, and think that their voices are better than everyone elses'.

Would be an intriguing study to read on personality types and college majors
