Kursk region Russia tightens security after Ukraine incursion Second article I read... First one addressed Russian citizens fleeing Russia to nearby Georgia instead of waiting for Putin to act (per article) Anyone see similar on the news? Anyone following non-Olympics world news? www.cbsnews.com/news/russia-tightens-security-kursk-region-incursion-ukraine/Russia tightens security where Ukraine launched an incursion as fighting persists August 10, 2024 / 12:28 PM EDT / AP Russia on Saturday announced what it called a counterterrorism operation to increase security in the border region of Kursk, where an incursion this week by Ukrainian forces caught Russian troops off-guard and exposed its military vulnerabilities in the nearly 2½-year-old war.
The measures announced for Kursk, and for the neighboring Belgorod and Bryansk regions that border Ukraine, allow the government to relocate residents, control phone communications and requisition vehicles.
The raid that began on Tuesday is the largest cross-border foray of the war and raises concerns about fighting spreading well beyond Ukraine.
A Russian plane-launched missile slammed into a Ukrainian shopping mall on Friday, killing at least 14 people and wounding 44 others, authorities said.

The Kosvo article was about survivors of the atrocities there by Serbs. People lined up against walls and shot with 25% with scars or bullet wounds still here. Women raped, some multiple times and things I did not feel up to knowing. I remember when Yugoslavia split up. I had not paid attention to the fact Kosvo wasn't considered its own independent county until 2008. Slovenia and Croatia were first around 1991/1992.
And yes sometimes reading about a certain kind of bad thing makes my mind notice similar bad things happening. That's all. I've been expecting Russia and Ukraine to push on this war while the world is paying attention to the Olympics.

I am concerned my DIL, her sister, and BIL are in Russia and have been since the end of July visiting relatives, our 9 year old grandson is with them. They are due home August 29th. I hope nothing happens, I have worried all summer. Her dad had never seen grandson and she needed to renew her Russian passport, she has dual citizen status, grandson does not.
So far, so good.

I'd be concerned too. I believe the travel advisory for Russia for Americans is simply something like do not go. In this political climate, I would not have risked grandson going there. Is where she is visiting anywhere near the path the Ukrainians are carving out?

I don't know, son won't tell me things that upset me. They were going to go to St Petersburg, her BIL is on the way. And maybe she had to go to Moscow to renew her Russian passport. She and grandson are not going near Ukraine but her sister was as she has a different father. They have been in far east Russia at Armunsk and went to Vladivostok to see relatives. Her dad had never seen his only grandson and her russian passport was going to expire. Son said there is no good time to go and he didn't like it but knew why. The places her mom got visas have all closed and she would have to go clear across the country so she can't visit now, she did before.
I understand the reason, but hubs and I are scared they could hold more people after letting a bunch through. Son made her get a burner phone and I think he has one too so nothing gets into their things. They are flying out of Turkey. So I'm hoping, the time is getting closer. I told little guy keep his mouth shut about politics and I'm sure his mom has too. She worries about saying the wrong thing here so she is careful. But still..... I won't breath easy till they are on the plane home.

Understood. Son shouldn't tell you anything though, it's a security risk. You'd have to stay glued to the news like many service members families do. I do not know where the Ukraine soldiers are in relation to Moscow or St Petersburg. Either would make a great target.
