Has there been any preliminary report on what caused it? It’s sickening to see it spiral down like that. Poor passengers.

The initial thought is the pilots were not paying attention to the altitude and speed of the aircraft which might have caused it to stall. It was no longer aerodynamical. Once they lost control of the a/c it spiraled out of control to the ground. I believe both black boxes have been found and turned over to investigators. It will probably be a while until the final report is released.

my money is on wingtip icing. that plane has issues with it. the system probably failed, which kills the lift of the airplane, causing it to go into a dead spiral, which is what you see on the tape.

there is a way to stop that spiral, but only if the ice melts. and it takes some "room" to do it.
edit: part of basic flight training is stopping a dead spiral. but for large aircraft it is almost always done on simulators. having it happen to you in the real world is utterly terrifying. it is very easy to lose your senses and forget your training.
edit2: the black boxes will (nearly) absolutely tell if that is what it was, because you can feed the info into a simulator and run scenarios, then assign likelihood based on what actually happened. in other words, there is a WAY to make stuff like that happen intentionally, but the most likely is that it happened purely on accident. so the 1% goes to intentional, and the 99% goes to the accident.
