Something is also going on with Iraq attacking an airbase, but back to the OP Turkey is a member of NATO. From the first link, www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/russian-submarines-trapped-in-black-sea-as-turkey-blocks-escape/ar-AA1ofUP2?ocid=msedgntp&pc=DCTS&cvid=90fd82b5aba945fba27cc4751498e7ed&ei=38Four Russian Kilo-class submarines recently caused significant concern in the Black Sea. After the Ukrainians sank one of them—the "Rostov-on-Don," it became evident that the remaining units would soon cease to be a threat. They cannot leave the Black Sea due to Turkey's blockade of the Bosporus.
On Friday, during a missile attack on Crimea, the Ukrainians sank the Russian submarine "Rostov-on-Don." It was one of four such units in the Black Sea capable of attacking Ukraine with Kalibr missiles.
According to the Ukrainian service Defence Express, the successful attack on "Rostov-on-Don," undergoing repairs at the facility in Kilen Bay, Sevastopol, indicates that all Russian submarines in the Black Sea are trapped.

I was just curious about the closure. Thought it noteworthy it wasn't something done as a result of any current event but a long standing closure.

I think it was noteworthy because Turkey had to choose to honor its Nato obligations and hence protection they sought from Russia etc. Or fold and possibly lose support and their NATO membership. I do think the news in general has reruns from two and three years ago as in the Olympics there is a big contrast from the Olympics held in Tokyo during the Covid lockdowns compared to the Paris Olympics. Also, the Olympics can be used as a cover by various nations to do bad things at the Olympics or against their enemies while eyes are on the games. Its more than possible Biden's job is now to watch the globe and foreign issues while Harris campaigns.

I wasn't familiar with the closure and thought the article I found informative. Since it was new to me, my initial thought reading the OP was that there was a direct connection between the closure and the sinking. I was a bit surprised by the timing of the closure so posted the link for all to read just on the off chance that any of our fellow board readers didn't know either.

Its more than possible Biden's job is now to watch the globe and foreign issues while Harris campaigns. The story I posted the link to above referenced this as the source of Turkiye's right for the closure, nothing to do with NATO. The (Montreux) Convention regarding the Regime of the Straits, often known simply as the Montreux Convention, is an international agreement governing the Bosporus and Dardanelles straits in Turkey. Signed on 20 July 1936 at the Montreux Palace in Switzerland, it went into effect on 9 November 1936, addressing the long running Straits Question over who should control the strategically vital link between the Black and Mediterranean seas. link
