www.nytimes.com/live/2024/07/27/us/harris-trump-biden-election?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare&sgrp=c-cbIn the closing minutes of his speech to a gathering of religious conservatives on Friday night, former President Donald J. Trump told Christians that if they voted him into office in November, they would never need to vote again.“Christians, get out and vote. Just this time,” he said at The Believers’ Summit, an event hosted by the conservative advocacy group Turning Point Action, in West Palm Beach, Fla. “You won’t have to do it anymore, you know what? Four more years, it’ll be fixed, it’ll be fine, you won’t have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians.” Mr. Trump, who never made a particular display of religious observance before entering politics, continued: “I love you, Christians. I’m a Christian. I love you, you got to get out and vote. In four years, you don’t have to vote again. We’ll have it fixed so good, you’re not going to have to vote.” Mr. Trump’s comments came at the end of a nearly hourlong speech in which he appealed to religious conservatives by promising to defend them from perceived threats from the left. Earlier in his remarks, he lamented that conservative Christians do not vote in large numbers, a complaint he had made repeatedly on the trail. “They don’t vote like they should,” Mr. Trump said of Christians. “They’re not big voters.” Mr. Trump’s suggestion that Christians would not have to vote again if he is elected quickly spread across social media. Some argued that it was a threat that the 2024 election could be the nation’s last if he were to win and claimed it was further evidence of an authoritarian, anti-democratic bent he has displayed throughout his political candidacy.

Couple the comment with this one: "Earlier in his remarks, he lamented that conservative Christians do not vote in large numbers,"
A consistent fantasy Trump tries to sell is that once we are living in the utopia his policies will create, there will be no significant opposition. Therefore, if conservative Christians will overcome their tendency to not vote this time, there won't be a need for them to turn out ever again because the country would remain as they desire without their help.

Isn't this the third election he's peddled this lie?
Maybe the horse on the Seine made him think the time of Revelations has come?

it is not a premonition, if you intend to carry it out.
it is a goal.

If he’s capable of creating a Christian utopia, why didn’t he do it the first time he got elected? Biden wouldn’t have gotten elected in the first place, if Trump truly created a utopia that everyone would love. Maybe he thinks once he kicks out all the millions of illegal immigrants and they kill off the trans people and gay people (because all trans and gay people are pedophiles) and force the non Christians into training camps to make them covert into Christianity, he will have created a utopia that the remaining people will enjoy forever.

Just as long as it doesn’t impact me at all and everyone is a consenting adult. His fantasy life is destroying the country. He could go down as the American Nero, only he won’t be playing his fiddle as Washington is burning, he’ll be playing golf. Time to impose some reality in that bronzed, heavily hair sprayed head.

Who has listened to this bit? There's a lot of people who heard "I'm NOT a Christian". Which is even weirder for him to say. What do you think?

When I was young and foolish (as opposed to now where I am old and foolish ), I would occasionally attempt to logically explain to Christians the ridiculousness of their fantasy. Like I said, young and foolish. While I applaud your attempt "to impose some reality," your wonderfully logical approach I don't see as effective. Above I was just attempting to have some fun with it.

Though I seem to remember that Pence was Catholic, too, before he was born again.

What about Mormons? Are they Christian? A good friend of mine moved from New Jersey to Memphis. We both worked for the same company and in the same HR department. Her HR department VP held a Christmas Party shortly after my friend moved here. The wife of the VP introduced herself to my friend. Then the wife asked my friend which church she joined. My friend offered the name of a local Catholic church. The VP's wife then said, "Oh. So you are not a Christian." My friend was dumbstruck. The VP and his wife are/were Southern Baptists.

Not sure how I thought Vance was the subject of your discussion. I guess it was, in my mind anyway, the many personalities of JD Vance. But it is true many Southern Baptists do not consider Catholics to be Christian. Worse than that, Vance’s wife is Hindu and not white, which is also hard for the MAGAs to get behind. Vance is turning out to be kind of a flop, in MAGA word.

I feel like his followers really need to read their Cliff notes version of the Book of Revelations.
I'm an atheist and that speech just managed to make me consider may actually be something to the Anti-Christ concept.
Holy heebie jeebies Batman.

But it is true many Southern Baptists do not consider Catholics to be Christian. Worse than that, Vance’s wife is Hindu and not white, which is also hard for the MAGAs to get behind. Vance is turning out to be kind of a flop, in MAGA word. Speaking of Vance's wife (Washington Post article): Usha Vance told friends Trump appalled her. Now she’s working to elect him.The potential second lady found Trump’s actions on Jan. 6 “deeply disturbing,” a friend said. But ambition and devotion to her husband ultimately drove her to a place in the former president’s campaign. During her rise through America’s most prestigious schools, law firms and judicial clerkships, Usha Vance rarely — if ever — volunteered her opinions on the nation’s bitterly partisan politics to friends and colleagues. But she did express revulsion at former president Donald Trump’s actions on Jan. 6, 2021. Vance told friends she was outraged by Trump’s incitement of the deadly riot at the U.S. Capitol and lamented the social breakdown that fueled his political support, according to one friend, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive conversations. Her view at the time contrasts with the later pronouncements of her husband and Trump’s newly minted running mate, JD Vance, who has downplayed the storming of the Capitol and called participants who were jailed “political prisoners.” “Usha found the incursion on the Capitol and Trump’s role in it to be deeply disturbing,” the friend recalled. “She was generally appalled by Trump, from the moment of his first election.” Rest of article here: Usha Vance told friends Trump appalled her. Now she’s working to elect him.

Early on this election cycle I think one of my fellow PMers pointed out he might be one of many. As in there are too many authoritarians running countries at the moment, and we need to change that back to leaders for and by the people.
