I went to the grocery store this morning for strawberries (season is over here). I wanted both fresh (for a cake) and frozen (for smoothies).
In frozen the prices per pound were $2.99 for sliced and $3.69 for whole. Same brand. How does that make sense? I would think that there is more manufacturing required for sliced strawberries than whole.
What oddball pricing have you seen?

I think it could be that for whole, they kinda need to use the best quality ones only, as the customer will see the whole fruit. For sliced, I am sure the second tier is probably enough, maybe third. I don't know for sure, it's a guess.

What schildi said. Premium appearances almost always cost more when it comes to produce. And people!

What schildi said. IF "Best Quality" means consistent size, shape, and color. I don't know much about growing strawberries - but IF there are plants that produce a consistent size/shape berry where ALL the berries ripen/mature for picking at the same time then those berries may be more expensive to grow, harvest, and process than the "we specifically grow these strawberries to be cut up, for jellies, jams, and other strawberry products".
I wouldn't be surprised if the whole berries came from different farms and a different variety of plants than the ones that get turned into something else.

I haven't seen much odd ball pricing. I was amazed at the high prices on "junk food" at the Big Name grocery store though. I needed to buy chips for a family picnic and I couldn't get to Aldi. I paid $6 each for 9 ounce bags of chips. And some of the other prices on fast/convenience "food" I don't normally buy made me blink and do a double take. It's a once a year event and the weeks leading up to the picnic were chaotic so I didn't get to plan/shop around as much as I would normally. So, I just sucked it up and spent a heck ton of money for very little "food".

Yep I’ve started not buying chips. Excessive amounts of money $6 for a bag of chips? Nope!🙂↔️
