Every time I read about someone else’s crappy job situation, I realize how lucky I am to have one that I can work autonomously and my work has value to my management. You are indeed fortunate on both of those things. My situation started out that way, but things went downhill in the pandemic. I spoke to another co-worker who is planning to leave and her thoughts echoed mine - she has zero respect for the boss and no enjoyment for the job. "it's not the company we started with, or the people we started with," she said. Don't get me wrong. Workplaces change and develop and move forward; it's a must to survive. But moving forward while crushing everything that came before and making executive decisions without asking your employees the real-life, day-to-day consequences has a cost.

Today was a blessed day. I started running again after eight weeks of rehab on my knee. Felt good even though it was an awfully sloooooow jog.

CONGRATULATIONS!!! Retirement is the best job you never had.
The best part of retirement is Sunday night.
Enjoy every minute. In my first month or two, I got caught up in doing all the things I didn't have the time or energy for when I was working. When that was done to a certain comfort level (because it's never done and final), I'd figured out how to spend my day to day time. It's been three years and I still don't have a strict schedule. You will find your groove in no time.
I'm really happy for you.

And a good day it is, indeed. I still do get up early to work out - an old habit I don't plan to change. I got a lot done today, so far: Really upgraded my resume --changed the layout, typeface size and font so it looks more modern, cleaned up the wordiness, and thoroughly checked for typos and grammar.
Made a final (for this year) doctor appointment so all the planned ones are either done or scheduled. Called one company and got my login fixed so I could apply there (and I did the application online) Scheduled a job application "to do" list for tomorrow and also plan to take care of some financial stuff for DH. Going to the UPS store to return the company equipment - yes, I said I was going to hold onto it, but I have reconsidered that. I think having that stuff here is just bad karma. I need to go to CVS for a couple of things, and it is nearby. My mornings will be job-oriented and the afternoons will be yard work/housework stuff. Physical therapy is every day, so that will happen around 4 pm, unless I am actually at the PT office, like tomorrow and Thursday. I have eight more sessions. Still to decide: when to start Social Security and when to start taking the money from an old investment fund - I am fortunate that I do not need either one right now. I also have a Vanguard fund, but that is set to start paying me in four years, and I will not change that one.

I think you are doing the right thing in returning the company equipment.

I think you are doing the right thing in returning the company equipment. Me too; the room actually feels better without that stuff in it. It's like a pile of poison left the space.

I feel your relief. 18 months ago I bailed from my job which was crushing me - body and soul. Congratulations!! Good for you! That is exactly how I felt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hated every day I had to face life working there. The first day was a little strange, but I do have my routine now. I vary it a little here and there, but overall I do stick to it. I have to rake the yard again later today, as we have a tree shedding leaves non-stop. I also plan to go round 2 for running - just a short run. I have to say I am sleeping better thanks to quitting. That is one thing I noticed immediately. Oh, and I have an interview tomorrow for a part time job. Did not even take me a week to land an interview!

And just got another interview for Friday, and this is with a non-profit, part time for an actual salary! Two interviews, less than a week after quitting!

So glad you did this! Jerseyguy HATED his job but I could never get him to quit. Finally the business was bought out and he was forced out, 2 years before pension. He’s never forgiven them for greatly reduced pension Of course he got another and better job quickly

There is always karma out there, good and bad, and he got the good kind in getting the new job. Not good about the reduced pension (that does suck) but I am glad he got out of a job he hated.

It felt strange on Monday to not be working, but I have myself on the schedule and sticking to it. Keeping busy and active while still looking for something fulfilling and part time that pays decently.

Imma want more deets here. Tell us how this went down!
So, your colleague was being annoying and tattled to your boss; your boss called and you just said "nope, we're done here. I resign effective immediately?" You did get that pretty accurately. Yes, this punk was one of his minions who lords his title over people, but then when he gets down to it he does that, "Well, what do you think we should do here?" or "How do you you think the best way to handle this would be?" Dude, if your an alleged supervisor, you don't need to play the touchy-feely game. If you're calling me with an issue, you need to bring ideas to the table. I do too, of course, and between us, get a plan together. And don't get annoyed when I give you what you asked for. Neither of us has to like the situation or the solution. We have to solve it. No one walks away perfectly happy. No one wants a star, a cookie and a pat on the head from you.
He was so condescending, like he was speaking to his six-year-old son. Your son isn't working for you. Asking what I think the solution should be when you know damned well what you want to hear is pointless. If you were expecting tears and the rendering of garments and begging and pleading...nah, not from me.
Question? Does ageism has anything to do with why you were miserable? I ask because the “young” people are going to be the reason I eventually RE.

Let me clarify, it’s the way the newest employees treat the veterans.

Question? Does ageism has anything to do with why you were miserable? I ask because the “young” people are going to be the reason I eventually RE. In some respects, yes. And thank you for being respectful in the way you asked. The young minions hired by my ex-boss have no real interest in actually doing hard work. Lofty titles and managing other people who do work; now that they love. When something I did was questioned, three people (at least!) would jump on my case. Why? Why does it take three people minding my business? One would do just fine. Don't the other two have something better to do? And as for the boss? His interest in the company went downhill quite a bit in the last year or so. I was not the only one who noticed. Another employee (still someone I speak to) also noticed it - she is planning to leave as well. She no longer has any respect for what is going on.

Congratulations! I’m right there behind you - hope to be retired by December 31st. Different reasons for why my job is shitty - I came here years ago when this was a local, family owned company. We got bought by a big corporation, and it’s been a steady decline since then. Corporate decided to save money by getting rid of almost all the IT, HR and procurement people, which probably looked good on paper but increased the work load on the rest of us, as we have to try to do those functions ourselves, with the theoretical support of outside vendor ‘help desks’ We’ve lost a lot of vendors due to us not being able to get our invoices paid in a timely manner. Then they promoted a horrible guy as the facility manager - I call him the chaos vector. He seems to get off on being verbally abusive and causing strife between departments. In our last town hall, he talked for twenty minutes about how he was going to start firing managers. Not sure how he’s going to single out the doomed. He probably doesn’t know, either. There’s been a steady exodus of the seasoned workers over the last couple years, increasing in the last six months. I find myself thinking ‘what happened to XXX? And realizing they left months ago. Going through the company offices, I haven’t met at least 3/4 of the employees working there. Soon, I will be joining the mass exodus, and I will no longer care what happens to a company I once cared a lot about. It’s sad. Not sad for me though. I have a list of hobbies I plan to jump into - plus we need to sell this house and find one with a lot smaller yard, but I want to de- junk this place before we move. Plenty of work to do, and I’m looking forward to it - just like you are
