I was reading the debate over presidential debates and getting nostalgic for the days of my youth. Back when the political parties held later summer conventions and then candidates jumped seriously into campaigning - after families came together for Labor Day weekend. Do we really need debates before then?

IMHO, the more the campaign season is lengthened, the fewer people who pay attention. But then, maybe that's their plan.

As a country, we burn out over highly extended campaign seasons. Many countries have only six week long campaign seasons. Probably doesn't stop potential candidates from speaking four years in advance though.
No TV coverage of candidates until six weeks before the election.

I see multiple "they's" involved, each with their motivations. Cable stations have 24/7 scheduling to fill. (Cornholing? Really?) Political talking heads would have to get real jobs. Perpetual candidates wouldn't have anything to occupy their days. It all just feeds itself.
