I just saw Zone of Interest - I thought Boy in the striped pajamas did a better job telling a similar story - but my husband ‘liked’ the movie - hard to really like a movie about Auschwitz.
That said - if you are looking for a good movie American Fiction was soooooooo good. I also loved Past Lives, which is currently streaming (free on Paramount).
Kind of a rough year with the strike.

I was telling my sister several weeks ago about Zone of Interest. I have not seen it yet. I also told her about the Boy In The Striped Pajamas too which I have seen. BITSP is a heartbreaker.

American Fiction was amazing. American Fiction is my favorite. I know Oppenheimer will win - but I am hoping for an upset surprise victory for American Fiction. I also loved The Holdovers. And I was surprised how much I liked Killers of the Flower Moon. It was long. It was like two movies - so if you can’t make it through in one sitting, the minute you see Jesse Plemons face - turn off the movie and start there when you are ready for part 2.

thought Boy in the Striped Pyjamas was interesting
but its not true, its a work of fiction.....
and you wind up feeling sorry for the innocent little white boy and his family (never happened)
and not quite so sorry for the huge number of innocent Jewish children who really did go to their deaths in the gas chambers.
If there is a better take on this story I'd have a look
but dont want to see another fictional rewrite of one of the most outrageous things ever to happen to humanity.

Saw all those movies and they are all excellent but so different they are hard to compare. Saw Oppenheimer in an IMAX theater and it was visually stunning, especially the celebratory scene at the end. Killers of the flower moon, since it was a true story of the shitty way native Americans have been treated, was moving. And the acting in the Holdovers was exceptional. Hard to pick a favorite.

A bit of trivia about Paul Giamatti (and me): Last week or so the star of The Holdovers, Paul Giamatti, was on the Jimmy Kimmell show. After discussing the movie for a few minutes, Kimmell started talking about New Haven, Ct. pizza. It caught my attention. Paul Giamatti was born in New Haven. His dad, Bart Giamatti, was a professor at Yale University when Paul was born. Bart Giamatti later became president of Yale University and then seventh Commissioner of Major League Baseball. Paul also graduated from Yale University. Jimmy Kimmell and Paul Giamatti were talking about the best pizzerias in New Haven. I lived in New Haven from 1978-1991 so I knew all the places they were mentioning. New Haven usually has two or three pizzerias on ten best pizza places lists. I also lived between Yale University Hospital and Yale University. All within a two minute walk from where I lived.

If you have an opportunity to see Robot Dreams, consider it. It made me so happy.

I liked short doc The Last Repair Shop better than Nai Nai and Wai Po - also feel good. The short docs can be brutal some years. This year it wasn’t so bad.

I don't know if you watch the jimmy Kimmel show at night. But Kimmel and Matt Damon have a fake dislike of each other. It's been going on for years. All in good fun between the two. But at the end of the show, the dog Messi from the movie 'Anatomy of a Fall' is seen standing by Matt Damon's Hollywood Walk of Fame sidewalk star with his back leg raised as if he is taking a pee. Laugh out loud funny.

We howled at that (no pun intended) I thought the whole show was good - the performance of I’m just Ken, John Cena giving the costume award, Jimmy Kimmel - all very funny (yes, the post that JK read was a real post by Trump). I liked the addition of the personal touches for all the actor/actresses awards. It was a good show.

'20 Days In Mariupol' won the Academy Award for 'Best' Documentary. After just watching 20 Days In Mariupol, I can only say :
Fuck Putin Fuck the Russian armed forces Fuck the Russian press Fuck donald trump And fuck the members of the U.S. Congress who continue to not fund the Ukrainian people and Ukrainian military in their attempt to save their country.
The video below is the full 20 Days In Mariupol documentary courtesy of YouTube. The video is not for the faint of heart. It is disturbing. It is unnecessarily tragic.
