abc13.com/texas-abortion-law-no-exceptions-for-rape-rape-related-pregnancies-roe-v-wade-overturned/14359073/Newly-published statistics show the number of rape-related pregnancies after Texas' restrictive abortion law took effect. A study published Wednesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association shows that there were an estimated 26,313 rape-related pregnancies during the 16 months after Texas outlawed almost all abortions. Texas has the highest estimate among the 14 states with total abortion bans, though Texas also has the largest population, according to the study. Texas' abortion law does not offer any exceptions for survivors of rape or incest.the researchers estimate there were 519,981 rapes associated with 64,565 pregnancies during the four to 18 months after states implemented total abortion bans following Roe v. Wade being overturned in June 2022. Of the pregnancies, an estimated 5,586 occurred in states with exceptions for rape and 58,979 in states with no exceptions. Now the size of the problem has been estimated. Is anything going to happen except Gov. Abbott thinking he can stop rape in his state?

Talk about one of the least surprising outcomes as the result of a law. Births have also gone up as well. But that is what they wsnted

Apparently rapists from other countries bad, but rewarding your own is OK. There was a novel I read once that had a culture thar would not allow convicted rapists to breed under the belief the violence and bad tendencies could carry on to their progeny. I wonder if there is a way to navigate being told you were a product of rape or finding out that was the case. I think tht has to be up there with knowing one of your parents killed the other one. Especially if it was not in self defense or something like that.

Wait. Greg Abbott said he was abolishing rape. That was about a year ago. Has he not done it yet? He promised.

26k unwanted babies?
what is the estimated burden on the state?
prior to Dobbs, this WAS the number:
Most of money spent by taxpayers to comply with the health system may be spent for issues associated with unintended pregnancies. Economic analysis shows that U.S. taxpayers spend more than 12 billion each year on unintended pregnancy

I think you will be waiting a long time. Health and economic metrics will just continue to get worse, as I suspect most of the extra pregnancies are not in the higher income brackets. Wealthy people can’t have their precious daughter’s futures ruined by an “inconvenient” pregnancy. And if the outlaw abortion in the US, you can always plan a quick European vacation

the TRUTH of this matter is that evangelicals care about the "unborn" and that conservatives care about their votes. that is all that matters. the human and REAL cost of this is immaterial. people can suffer and die during pregnancy, and it can cost the taxpayers billions, and they won't lift a finger to stop it (even though they pretend to care and say stuff like they will pay for it, they don't, and they won't).
this is why we have separation of church and state, in case anyone was wondering.

if they really cared, the funding would have been in place before their bills passed.
after all, what generally PRECEDES a bill is an analysis of "fiscal impact". that way, they can set up funding by, say, increasing sales or business taxes in the state to OFFSET the cost.
that was not done, here. ergo, they don't give a fuck.

If they really cared about anything other than making sure women know and keep their place and making sure there is an ever increasing pool of economically challenged people to exploit they would invest in the things that actually DO prevent unintended pregnancies. Such as literacy and education for women, easy access to affordable birth control and proper sex education at an early age for both boys an girls. Since they do none of this I argue with people all the time that abortion bans have nothing to do with protecting unborn babies or preventing pregnancy. It has to do with control and cementing the power of certain people. Women's wages are already positioned to be set back decades due to thousands having to leave the workforce thanks to the pandemic. Doesn't take a lot to topple that over into never recovering in my lifetime. The easiest way to accomplish that is tie me to my uterus. If I can't control when I get pregnant it makes it a hell of a lot harder for me to achieve economic independence and thereforce a voice.

Carving out exceptions for rape victims? It does next to nothing for abortion access. After I posted a quick TikTok about new research that estimates that sexual assault caused over 64,000 pregnancies in states where abortion is completely banned, a man popped into the comments to downplay the findings. When he couldn’t get traction on his complaints, he made a crack about the fact that I color my hair purple. He seemed to have missed that I also color my hair blue and maroon, but I didn’t want to quibble with him about it while he was already stewing. I keep thinking about that anti-abortion dude and connecting him to the research on sexual assault and pregnancy published by JAMA. It’s telling that something as banal as hair color can so easily rile these types of guys up, isn’t it? But it makes perfect sense that someone bothered by such a radical expression of bodily autonomy — that is, me dying my hair fun colors — would believe the government should be able to force people to stay pregnant against their will. If I wanted people to believe that my investment in denying abortion access to tens of millions of people arose from a passion for preserving life and not, let’s say, an unmitigated sense of entitlement and rabid desire for control over other people’s bodies, then I’d probably have responded a little differently than this guy. At the very least, I might steer clear of language that serves to minimize the horrible consequences of sexual assault. But it’s getting harder for abortion opponents to mask their true aims: to preserve and perpetuate patriarchal power, and to punish and persecute pregnant people who are insufficiently compliant, obedient and subservient. The researchers behind the JAMA estimates acknowledged that their numbers are simply that — estimates — due to the difficulty of obtaining accurate statistics on rape and sexual assault. The numbers are horrifying, but they are still less striking than what they tell us about abortion bans and their impacts: that, as the JAMA research reveals, “persons who have been raped and become pregnant cannot access legal abortions in their home state, even in states with rape exceptions.” This is by design. Tens of thousands of people forced into pregnancy and compelled to carry pregnancies to term are not the unintended collateral damage of abortion bans. They’re among the the intended targets of abortion bans, because anti-abortion politics are the politics of abuse. Rapists and sexual predators and domestic and intimate partner abusers are motivated by the desire for control and domination. So, too, backers of abortion bans. The laws are working as intended — including by creating false dichotomies around “good” abortions and “bad” ones. Rest of article here: Carving out exceptions for rape victims? It does next to nothing for abortion access.

I listened to an NPR story this weekend about one of the most broken foster systems in the US - the one in Texas. Especially for kids with mental health problems (not uncommon in child abuse /neglect cases) they get shuttled around, sometimes spending months in ‘temporary’ groups in hotel rooms, two to a bed. Mental health counseling usually isn’t available at the temporary shelters. Every time the kid changes foster homes, the mental health treatment facility usually changes, too. Case workers have huge caseloads, not many resources and the get blamed if anything goes wrong - usually they quit within four years. So yeah, Texas doesn’t care about the kids. They don’t care if abusive parents have even more kids.

Tough job and usually low pay.

None of the red states will lift a finger to help those moms or the kids. They will raise more angry kids that agree they are just oppressed by the liberals and swell the red neck voter roles.
It is absolutely sickening, disgusting, and immoral. These are not christians they are just cruel people.
I am so disgusted by it all.
Even my 8 year old grandson is asking questions. He told me, well grandma we all have passports, we can all go to Canada and live if we need to. Out of the mouths of babes. And yet the ignorant Magas continue on. I am sick of it, sick of it all.
