I'm not nervous. Good thing too considering that I will plant my butt in a plane for 11 hours straight tomorrow...

I am a little nervous about the door thing as when I fly to Illinois in the near future I won't have much choice on how and when. Not worried about the plane catching on fire even though that does happen from time to time. I posted it mainly because I found the first paragraph funny and wanted to share it.
However with my Dad firmly committed to dying and exiting the planet I am remembering things from our shared past. The flight disaster below we both saw. He had seen off a student maybe two to this very flight only to watch it crash and burn. Meanwhile in another town I was working a job as a file clerk and that office was on the second floor, I think. I saw the smoke as did many others. It was only when I got home did I learn Dad witnessed the death of someone who he had just taught. He did classes here and there for his company and people would fly in to take them. This is not a good memory for either of us.

She said they were swamped with calls cancelling flight reservations after the crash.

She said they were swamped with calls cancelling flight reservations after the crash. I'm so very sorry. I think what happened in my dad's situation is he volunteered to take two of his students to the airport instead of them spending money on cabs. One had a different flight and the last student was on this one. Yes I remember the flight cancellations and I think it was a freak combination of the one engine going out when it did and the turbulence at take off. People were probably smart to cancel for that day. The DC-10s were very reliable aircraft so it was a shocker all the way round. How did your mom take the news about the crash once she was home? I know my dad felt some guilt over taking the one student to make the flight on this particular plane. Not sure if he ever got to the space of it was not under his control and they guy would have perished if he had taken a taxi instead. I remain grateful that I personally do not directly know anyone who died in the Towers on 9/11. I however know legions of people who do. Hard stuff. Cool about working for American Airlines though. Did your family ever get cheap flights back then?

Did your family ever get cheap flights back then?American Air had counselors on site at their call centers for employees to talk to and about the crash itself. My mom got airline (interline) discounts and she and dad took advantage of them. I got my own interline benefits through my employer. Worked for a cargo airline for thirty years. One time myself and two co-workers flew over to Zurich, Switzerland on a Thanksgiving weekend. Our round-trip airfare on Swiss Air was $70 (we paid the taxes only). Left on Thankgiving night and returned Sunday. I used the discounts quite frequently during my younger years. I think I have been to Paris (my favorite international city) five times? I still get some benefits as a retiree but I only travel domestically now.
