I came across this today during a break at work. Sounds good. All states should require this but as I read it further there was a paragraph that said this. "A person is not required to submit proof of citizenship with the voter registration form, but failure to do so means the person will only be eligible to vote in federal elections (known as being a "federal only" voter). A "federal only" voter will become eligible to vote a "full ballot" in all federal, state, county and local elections if he or she later provides valid proof of citizenship to the appropriate County Recorder's office". Why the 2 tier voting system? Lunacy.
Being the conservative that I am it seems the Secretary of State is just trying to bolster the voter rolls in favor of the Democrats in the Federal elections. This policy is rife for fraud.

Here in the real world (as opposed to Muskland), Arizona has required proof of citizenship to register to vote in Arizona elections for nearly two decades, a law put into place by voters in 2004. Because Arizona requires proof while federal law does not, we have two sets of ballots: the full ballot containing all races for those who have provided documents proving their citizenship and federal ballot that lists only races for president and Congress for those who have not. We’re the only state that has a bifurcated ballot because we’re the only state that requires more than federal law in order to vote in state and local elections. As Votebeat’s Jen Fifield points out, Arizona has about 32,000 federal-only voters. A recent Votebeat analysis shows most of them are concentrated around college campuses, which can mean one of only two things: Either college campuses are hotbeds of undocumented immigrants plotting to cast illegal votes. Or college campuses have out-of-state students who likely left their citizenship papers back home. And before you ask, ABC 15 has reported that 8,114 federal-only ballots were cast in Maricopa County in the 2020 election — 0.4% of the vote.
The breakdown was Joe Biden, 5,781, to Donald Trump’s 2,134. Even if you buy into Musk’s insinulation that something nefarious is afoot in Arizona, Biden won Maricopa County by 45,109 votes. Statewide, he won by 10,457 votes. Only don’t try to tell Musk’s millions of loyal followers that the conspiracy isn’t real. After all, they read it on X, so it must be true.www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/elon-musk-just-spread-misinformation-about-arizona-elections-to-168-million-followers/ar-AA1mI08JWhen are these people going to quit with the BS about the election and accept the facts?

A third factor: An Arizona driver's license is the main way to prove citizenship. Young college students might be less likely to drive but more likely to be motivated to register and vote.

It is not a requirement in the constitution

exactly.
and if they want to make it federal law, they have the means to do so. they should do that.
i have never even HEARD this issue discussed at the federal level, except by idiots like Trump, who seem to think that it would impact elections, which of course, it won't. that was already illustrated in the article above.

If they start requiring proof of citizenship for federal voting, it may not hurt the people that they want it to hurt. It's been 20 years since they added the requirement to provide proof of citizenship for SNAP and Medicaid benefits. Most people on public assistance would either be able to be verified electronically by SSA or just go to the public assistance office and ask for copies of their proof of citizenship from their case file.

I find it rather odd you have never had any complaints regarding Republican controlled states and their gerrymandering of their state's districts.

There is no actual "proof" of citizenship in the US. There are things that people assume prove citizenship but do not. Paasports. Birth Certificates with raised seals. At least with naturalized citizens, i.e. immigrants there is actual real proof of citizenship because they jump certain hoops and take a citizenship test to get in. Plus the whiners are too uninformed to realize those who are admitted to the US have strict rules on how quickly they must find jobs and become self supporting. Therefore how quickly they usual add to the federal and state taxes, I think somewhere from less than a year to at most 18 months if memory serves.

Its part of the GOP fantasy tropes i.e. stories they tell over and over to rope in their gullible voters. x large number x 1000 because some of it is just too stupid In my crosshairs today is the "Biden wants you to live off the government" x 1 trillion No ... That's not why government programs exist including the military. It goes along with Russia might be Trump's friend but letting them take over Ukraine is a very bad idea.

I imagine ripvanwinkle will now want everyone to start carrying papers which identify their race, gender, religion, date of birth, family national origin, and other identifying characteristics. Failure to carry these papers when stopped for no reason by the police will result in arrest, conviction and prison sentence. No appeal either. This is in addition to a state issued driver's license or state issued ID.

If the feds start requiring it there is no guarantee what they will accept, but it will likely include something similar.

If you were born on a reservation its more likely there is proof of it even if it isn't a raised seal birth certificate or similar.

I wonder about citizenship verification for the religious right that are having home births with midwives and then home schooling - maybe a baptismal certificate but no crib card, no shot records, no school records. I know my niece and nephew must have some kind of citizenship verification because they are on CHIP, but there may be quite a few with no records at all.
