I happened upon a site that had used Comcast/Xfinity cable TV boxes for sale. I was always assuming you had to rent the cable box from Comcast. Every time I got a new box I had to have them "talk" to my box for it to work. I found one that had the same model number as the one I have. Whats the chance these on sale will work? My first thought is these are stolen? I know you can buy from Best Buy a Comcast compatible internet modem from Arris because I bought one a few yrs ago.

Could be stolen. Could have taken the financial hit for not returning the box and so selling it. IDK. Have you thought of asking the seller or the old calling for a friend thing with your ISP?

I had a roommate in the basement. He bought his own Dish receiver. Registered it with Dish as self owned. Dish tried to collect for it when he moved out but a phone call took care of it.

I went down the rabbit hole.... and you can't purchase a Comcast cable box. But you can purchase a CableCard that goes into a cable box you purchased (or already own). I'm not sure if you rent the CableCard or not - or if it's cheaper than renting a cable box.
Perhaps you buy the Comcast/xfinity cable box online - but then have to get the CableCard from comcast/xfinity to access cable?
