my mom had Parkinson's.
there is no evidence that it is genetic. environmental factors are blamed for it.
disclosure: i have not read the article, but will do so, now.

I think environmental factors cause a significant amount of dementia and Alzheimer's. My mom is dead of Alzheimer's, yet my father probably only had altered mental status when he did something stupid like dehydrate himself. What we call mental illness is significantly affected by environmental factors. Sorry about mom, Parkinson's is a tough thing. Some dementia patients get something similar with one particular type of dementia.

my mom had many good years. she had early onset Parkinson's at 46. she didn't lose much cognitively for the first 30 years. the last 10 years were pretty brutal, though.
edit: i didn't know about the genetic issue until she was in her 70's. i finally asked. my entire adult life, up to that point, i had thought it was genetic.
can you imagine how relieved i was? i am not sure you can.

I have an older friend and a younger brother, diagnosed with Parkinson's. I would love to see a cure for it, soon enough to help their lives. Even a treatment would be great, to improve the quality of their lives.
YAY, science! I agree.

I agree. how are YOU doing, tm? being a between child, you had similar exposure to your brothers. i take it you are clean? they will probably develop a screener for this. we should both take it.

My dad had essential tremors, I have essential tremors, my younger sister -twin to brother, with Parkinson's, has essential tremors and one of my 2 daughters, has essential tremors. None of us has been diagnosed with Parkinson's. If they come up with a screen for it, I would definitely be interested in taking it. I hope the info learned about Parkinson's disease, leads to a treatment of tremors, in general. It's surprising how much tremors impact your ability to function, in life. Because they make everything harder and take longer. Even getting dressed. And I hate having people make comments about it, like the checker, at Walmart... "I see you have Parkinson's disease." No. I don't. But what purpose did him saying that serve? Kind of like pointing out my hair, or skin color. Why would you say that? It wasn't a compliment. Just weird.

I can a little bit. When my mom was first diagnosed my sisters assumed it was genetic as her mother had it as well. They were worried and I think mentally started planning for what to do later in their lives. I rejected that pronouncement with saying, well I am more like dad. I have changed things over the years to protect myself like I do not use aluminum cookware unless I have no choice. My deodorants have been aluminum free for years. I try to keep up with mental flexibility and learning new things. I do think there are things we eat and drink that contribute to the problem.

Cashiers are told to engage the customer but rarely are they trained how to engage. What they should and should not say in awkward situations. Was this cashier 25 or under?

My son and two grandsons have essential tremors. They party a lot. Probably get dehydrated frequently. All three have jobs that pound the nerves and tissue in their hands and forearms. Carpentry and mechanicking. My son's were relieved somewhat when he started getting enough red meat protein.

No. I would guess, at least my age, maybe older. Sorry. There is a customer I try to avoid serving especially since she is kinder to my male coworker. She asks inappropriate things and wants to keep talking as if our business was there for social hour. There are customers with tremors. I usually just ask if they need me to move things, so it is easier to pick up. Once the good ones get to know you, they will share or not, their medical story.

More good science news - they have a cure for sickle cell anemia! And they are continually finding cures for various cancers, so maybe in the not so distant future it won’t be fatal anymore.
Plus a cure for feline kidney disease!! Cats may be able to live into their 30s!!
(Read an article on overlooked good science news recently.)
Also, bees aren’t in danger of dying out anymore!!

We have cures if we can afford it as a society. Given the current cost, someone who isn't the patient will be paying. Until we answer who this someone is, this is all theoretical
