My aunt comitted suicide on Thanksgiving night in the '70s. There was a lot of mental illness going on around her immediate family at that time. TY for that Nasty Woman. I was accused of possibly being mentally ill by my boss at work because she does not want to believe I am in breakdown mode due to physicality of sinuses plus NJ plus NJ bus lifestyle etc. Am currently thinking how to resolve the dilemma of the day.

For me it's about spending time with my boys, and maybe someday their families. I'm not a big extended family gathering person, but have tolerated it in the past.
My perfect family gathering will take place this year with my wife and boys, on a big ship in the Caribbean, drinks in hand, far, far away from the rest of the family.

I'm trying to think about how to plan something for myself for this year. I live 5 hours one way away from my parents and both are still working. Dad has very limited time. My brother is local but I'm not sure if he'd want to do something or might have plans.
More options open up in 2024 with dad's retirement but I've decided to try and do something for myself this year. I just don't know what that thing is yet.

One thing I would like to change about my holidays is to find a way to host it. Right now we alternate going to Phoenix to see my family for Thanksgiving and then spending Christmas with my husband's family. I never host Thanksgiving because I am visiting from out of state, and I never host Christmas because my sister in law is allergic to my cats and wouldn't come. During the pandemic we hosted a couple of events on our back deck, but even having an outside event is awkward for my sister in law. It doesn't matter how much I clean, she says she immediately starts to itch the moment she walks in the door to use the facilities.

Neither DH or I have living family except for very distant elderly cousins. So my perfect holiday experience would be at a resort where I could experience decorations, ice sculptures, tree lightings, musical performances, glorious food, and unlimited naps and TV movies. Ooops, I almost forgot firepits with smores and fireworks too.
