Cruising the net and came upon this. I think this is taking invasion of privacy too far. Govt and tech companies have too much of me already. What are the safeguards on this data? Who will keep this data. FBI, CIA, NSA??
This is under the guise of drunk driving which I do not condone. I don''t drink. Quit that 30+ yrs ago. I've had 2 friends killed by drunk drivers.
But what else will this program in your car do? If I splash on too much after shave that has alcohol will the sensors in the car think I'm drunk? What if some friends call me at 1AM and says they're too drunk to drive and I go pick them up and they smell like a lot of booze from their breaths. Will the car be able to sniff the alcohol and think I'm drunk? The program would know I'm at at bar with the gps and transmit it to whoever is monitoring this. This is good intentions gone bad. Where will it all end?

This article is almost 2 years old. Have you tried looking on the Department of Transportation’s website to see if any progress has been made on developing a system? Has the ACLU posted any updates since Nov 22, 2021? The hoped for roll out date is 2026. They may not make the deadline or the program could already been scrapped. Have you checked?

Of course he has not checked. He's leaving it up to everyone else to do his homework.

They are guessing. It could be as simple as using the car's black box software to detect drunk driving patterns that have already been discovered by insurers.

FWIW, I think all the red state abortion laws are far more big brother than something that isn't even implemented. Imagine being forced to possibly die if nature decides to miscarry the fetus and the body is unable to expel the fetus because of fetus miscarried at a later stage of development.

You mean like states passing laws that make it illegal to drive on roads if you are going out of state for an abortion. You mean like that invasion of privacy?

I agree laws like is can be an issue. Glad the ACLU is out there keeping an eye on things. Good reason to support them don't you think, rip?

i support rip in this. i am a total privacy nut.
i think that i should be able to do whatever i wish with my person or property so long as i am not harming a non-consenting other. i don't like tracking and surveillance, which is already a very serious problem in the US. and i don't like measures that presume guilt without proof.
i agree with all of the other objections to state over-reach on this thread. the state should mind its own business, and let me mind mine. who i have sex with, what i smoke, and where i go should be none of their g*(damn business.

oh, and don't even get me started on the rubber stamp FISA court. it needs independent oversight, as do ALL law enforcement investigations.

VERY doubtful any "progress" has been made with this. under Trump? i would not rule out mandatory anal probes.

So I did his homework for him again and this is an update from Tuesday, November 7, 2023, a day before he started this thread. Drunk-driver ‘kill switch’ for autos on chopping block in House spending bill

Can't think of anything right off the top of my head but in the past they have taken up some what I call "You've got to be kidding" causes.

Yeah, when governed by principle one can be put in some difficult situations. I have to respect them 100% for that even when it challenges a personal preference.
