Following the winning record of the abortion-rights issue in previous elections in other states, Ohio voters have apparently won in their attempt to enshrine protection for abortion rights into the state constitution, after earlier defeating an attempt to make it more difficult to make such a change. In addition, Kentucky voters have re-elected Democratic governor Andy Beshear, who made protecting abortion rights a key part of his campaign. Beshear defeated a Trump-backed candidate in the process. Abortion rights are also directly credited for the Democratic overperformance in elections last year.
Republicans have wanted to overturn Roe for a long time. Well, congratulations on that. It looks like it will cost them much over the coming years.

that recent NYT poll that has everyone's hair on fire?
that poll assumes that Trump beats his charges. if he loses even ONE of the big cases, every one of those swing states vote for Biden.
and that makes perfect sense, if you think about it. not just from the practical perspective- that nobody wants a unrepentant felon in charge. but from an INSTITUTIONAL perspective.
if Trump is RIGHT, then the courts are just a sham and he will win every case. if Trump is WRONG, then the courts are functioning and he will lose most, if not all of his cases.
in other words, either that branch of government is functioning, or it is not.

Yes, it’s going to continue to be a voting issue.
In Ohio, men also voted to protect the right to have an abortion, proving it’s not just a factor for women.
In Kentucky, a very effective ad for the Dems featured a young woman who was raped by her stepfather and got pregnant at 12.
I think a lot of male GOP politicians just don’t understand women’s biology- like how frequently women suffer from miscarriages, and how treatment for a miscarriage parallels an abortion, which is why we now have women sent home from the hospital, bleeding and risking sepsis, because their miscarriage is taking days to occur naturally.
I don’t think any of them really thought Roe vs Wade would get overturned- they were just pro- life to garner votes.

They are replacing it with anti-Trans. I think they were trying for anti-gay, but trans people are way scarier.

They are replacing it with anti-Trans. I think they were trying for anti-gay, but trans people are way scarier. they are also vastly fewer in number. they are trading double digit percents for single digit percents. it is always safer to pick on an even smaller minority.

last night was another good night for Democrats. they really only fell short in MS. a state that Trump won by 16% in 2020.
edit: i think the most pleasing outcome was in VA. this result was CLOSELY tied to abortion.
Younkin had a full court press to win the Senate. he needed three seats. he got one. Democrats held the VA Senate 21:19 but in his effort to shift the Senate, he neglected to work the House, which the GOP was leading by 2 seats. he lost 3 seats and the fourth is too close to call.
so, this was not a THUMPING, but given how hard Younkin was pressing for absolute victory, i think we can call this absolute (though narrow) defeat.

Speaking of the House, they voted to reduce the Trans secretary (I cannot spell his name!!) to one dollar.
MTG was pissed, though, because she tried to do this a few weeks back and her amendment lost, with 23 GOPers voting against it, because Ms. Greene is a nasty person who does not even play well with her party members.
She’s now sulking. No one cares, Marge.

I'm beginning to wonder if abortion access is a political issue. It has some amazing legs -- almost as if people are voting with their pocketbooks.
I know that I am not the only person who calculated after Roe fell what getting an abortion or decent miscarriage care would cost them. The costs doubled for me. Then I realized that I had probably miscalculated and that I probably would not be able to make the trip alone and that I should probably double the travel costs and lost wages. Then I realized that I would not be able to pull this off discretely and that someone that one of us worked with would figure it out and disapprove putting our jobs and health insurance in jeopardy.
People balk at these kind of costs and risks.

the more you think about it, the more costly, unfair, and downright cruel it gets.

Northern Mississippi is part of the Memphis tv viewing area. So anti-Presley for governor ads were pretty disgusting. Had trump and Stephen Miller's fingerprints all over them. Had governor Tate Reeves been a an ethical man he would have denounced the ads.

How about starting that their pay gets docked if there is a shutdown, and thru don’t get back pay.
Seems like if they are punishing people who do nothing, they should be at the top of the list. It will also help reduce the deficit. Talk about a win/win!

it makes so little difference.
now, cutting the defense budget 50%? THAT makes some difference.
500 people x 200k = $100M? the military spends that much every HALF HOUR.
the Trump corporation will owe NY enough to pay for congress for 3 years.
see what i mean?

i doubt it. they will go to Go Fund Me, Harlan Crow, and line up their corporate jobs. i think it is more about power than money to them. they are well beyond their needs.

What are we, 11 days away from shutting down the government?

Why not go all in and reduce the salary for ALL of congress to $1? Because then "commoners", non-wealthy, working class, etc. would never be able to run for Congress. Only the independently rich/funded would be able to be in congress.

Is your first sentence sincere? It's always been a political issue. It's only on a national conversation for politicians to garner votes.

I'm beginning to wonder if abortion access is a political issue. I think the point being made is that abortion access has an important economic aspect that could be fueling votes.

A Tuesday election which didn't get too much attention. Yusef Salaam spent seven years in prison. Donald Trump once called for his execution. Now Yusef Salaam will be on the New York City Council.Donald Trump once called for his execution − now Yusef Salaam will be a member of the New York City Council. Salaam, one of the "Central Park Five" who was exonerated for a 1989 attack on a jogger, won election Tuesday without opposition; he easily won a Democratic primary earlier this year. "I am really the ambassador for everyone's pain," Salaam told the Associated Press in an interview. "In many ways, I went through that for our people so I can now lead them." Salaam and four other Black and Latino men were imprisoned after being wrongfully convicted for the 1989 rape and beating of a white jogger in Central Park. The attack drew national attention, including that of Trump. Then a New York-based real estate magnate, Trump took out a newspaper ad calling on New York state to re-institute the death penalty. DNA evidence exonerated Salaam and the other co-defendants. Donald Trump once called for his execution. Now Yusef Salaam will be on the New York City Council.Wiki: Central Park jogger case
