Did you see the videos? I think they’ve made it mainstream media now.
Long story short, a group of white people docked their pontoon and left it, in a space reserved for one of the riverboats. When the riverboat was coming back, they couldn’t get to the dock because of the pontoon. The pontoon boat folks confronted a black dock worker when he tried to move the pontoon, still refused to move it, and one of them swung on the dock worker. That’s how the fight started.
Other white men ran and jumped in, several of them were fighting the dock worker, and that’s when all kinds of hell broke loose.
It’s not funny what happened, but some of the memes and posts about it today on FB were pretty funny.
Of course the Internet detectives tracked down the identities of the pontoon folks. One owns a convenience store, i think he also owns the pontoon, another is a teacher. The convenience store owner deleted personal and his business’ FB page, but not before there were screenshots taken of some racist comments he allegedly made on the page.
If he’d just followed the rules, and not put his pontoon there in the first place, or even moved it after the dock worker told him he needs to, none of it would’ve happened.
What do you all think about it?

I saw it. It appeared that the white folks were a bunch of drunken idiots who deserved to get charged for assault. I was most impressed by the other black gentleman who tried to break things up, kept his calm and never threw a punch. I don't think I could have that much restraint.

Yeah, I think there was definitely some alcohol involved with the pontoon folks.

I have not seen coverage, but from your description and being Alabama - not surprised. Most situations like that can be avoided by people doing the right thing. And when it goes wrong, like this instance, it is horrible but not unusual. I will have to look it up.
But also, I see dock workers like waitstaff - how you treat them affects how I see you.

Some people are just special and rules don't apply.

I have seen it. I have also seen all the memes spawned from it. My thoughts are mostly - play stupid games, don't be shocked when your ass gets beat - I hope there is no backlash - interactions like that make me uneasy as they could spiral quickly out of control - I would last about .04 seconds in a fight

Some people are just special and rules don't apply. Most of the videos start just before the pontoon guy hit the dock worker. But there’s one from somebody that was on the riverboat that couldn’t get to the dock, and the dock worker is constantly pointing at the riverboat, I assume, trying to make them understand why they needed to move the pontoon. Just move the darn thing! It wasn’t supposed to be there in the first place.

It was hard to tell from the crop, but that portion of the dock didn't look clearly marked as "no parking". Seems if that is just for the river boat, the dock could do a better job of marking it, and not forcing the workers to confront people on boats. Not saying ALL people with boats are jackasses, but having watched more than my share of idiots on boats videos, why introduce that friction point if you don't have to.

I agree it should be clearly marked. I’ve seen so much on FB that now I can’t remember where I saw what, but I saw somewhere that the pontoon folks were told they couldn’t dock there when they first did it.

Appalling behavior.
As for the woman in the light blue tee-shirt With the sunglasses hanging off of her shirt who also got involved and attacked the black dock worker by kicking him? Don't be surprised if a guy punches you in the face.

I was impressed with the black guy who swam to the dock to help the black dock worker. As for the women who also got involved and attacked the black dock worker? Don't be surprised if a guy punches you in the face. Oh Well! The swimmer was young, only 16yo. I sincerely hope he doesn’t get in trouble for getting involved. He has been called AquaMane and Scuba Gooding Jr. on social media lol. Eventually women ran to handle the women, because we know men aren’t supposed to hit women, even if the man is defending himself. I am pretty sure that didn’t go the way the pontoon folks thought it would. I normally don’t watch fight videos, because I don’t like violence, and some parts of the videos made me cringe, but I’m glad people didn’t just stand around and watch that man get beat up because he was trying to do his job. I think it’s ironic that it happened in that particular city. The whole thing actually makes me nervous since there has been talk about civil war lately. One of the comments I’ve seen the most today on all the FB posts, was “We are not our ancestors”. And my fear is that that incident is just the beginning of many more. Not that we shouldn’t fight back, I just don’t like the fighting, period.

I was reading about this on Reddit yesterday and someone asked for a conscience review of why this happened, and someone commented‘Alabama’ while someone else said ‘boat people’. Apparently there is a white trash subgroup in Alabama made up of boat people and this is how they behave. Lovely.

Tik Tok has been fucking hilarious about this - many surrounding the chair. I saw the chair’s wife make a statement (she was also a chair). I saw chair earring for sale and a chair holster.

Yeah, lots of stuff about the chair. I cringed when the woman in the red dress got hit with the chair though. She had already been handled and was down, not doing anything at that moment. I guess his adrenaline was rushing, but that one was too much.

Isn't that a "touristy" area?
I'm hoping the pontoon boat owner has consequences: looses license/docking rights (for some period of time). I'm hoping the some of the people wind up with charges and court appearances.
I do NOT have a soft spot in my heart for drunk/high people "having fun" or "just messing around". I bet that's what the white people involved in this are telling themselves and each other now - but we were just "messing around. We were just having a good time. The dock worker couldn't take a joke." I'm biased. I do NOT have any sympathy for drunk/high people when they act badly.
I'm sure there are lots of family/friends siding with the white guys - that they didn't do anything wrong (because bad behavour is an acceptable part of "having fun" while drinking.)
I do NOT like drunk people. Or the drunk people after they are more sober and telling themselves stories to make themselves feel better about what they did while drunk.

People tend to settle down. Years ago my dad and his cronies had gone to an out of town to play in a golf tournement. It involved staying over night to also play the next day. Apparently my dad, probably in his late fifties along with his cronies the same age, got into a verbal and then physical confrontation with a group of same aged men also playing in the tournement. No real physical harm to anyone. My mother could not control her laughter when my dad told her about the fight. She said it was so out of character for my dad and any of the other men to get into a physical fight. They were all in the medical field and needed their hands to be in good shape. Mom laughed and laughed.

Y'all the white people who started the brawl own Vasser's Mini Mart in Selma, AL. If you go to their Google reviews online you can legit see people shopping in klan hoods. I didn't believe it, so I went and looked. 😳
ETA: Definitely don't scroll to the bottom and look at the picture that appears to have a menu in it.

Yet there are some people on this board who claim that racism is not as much of a problem as we all think. Shopping in Klan hoods! Just another example of Donald Trump's "very fine people". I hope they all get thrown in jail and they lose their business.

I saw this in a comment
For the white people afraid of helping and getting hit and wondering how you help…
As a white man speaking, you become a witness. You explain how those fucking (bleep) started it. You explain how these amazing Americans stood up to bigotry and defended another American. You tell them as a white person the other white people started it.
Sometimes your skin color means your word is taken more so lean into it. Help your fellow black Americans.
I’m not 100% it’s okay to copy it here, so I understand if it gets deleted or I’m told to delete it. I edited out a slur with with the (bleep), that was referring to white people.
