How awful Tenn, although I expect there are more than a few similar stories. Many stories like that and many more stories we will never know about.

There are a few justifications that are both utter bullshit.
The first is that Africa was quite a mess and had some real problems. But, that was because white people were paying tribes to kidnap people so they could be sold into slavery. There is no telling what problems would have happened if there was no colonization and no slave trade. Maybe civil war would have damaged Africa the same or worse - but we can’t separate what happened from the true history that white people caused some real problems there.
The second is the fallacy that the US is the greatest country on earth and all those black people wouldn’t be living here if there were never any slavery, but because of slavery they have unprecedented economic opportunity that wouldn’t otherwise be available to them. First off, USA isn’t even in the top 10 for racial equality. I think there may be economic opportunity, but health outcomes and other issues don’t make the USA a slam dunk compared to those Nordic countries.
Those are the big two arguments I have heard.

The second one is very off the mark as black people are coming to America from African and Caribbean countries regularly to the US. No enslaved US ancestors required. I'm guessing they are unaware of that, there are many who came from Jamaica and Haiti just to name a couple countries that worked in the healthcare facility I used to work at. Slavery existed here in the 1700s. The Civil Rights movement did not fully happen until the 1960s. I think some folks see the high income of black athletes and celebrities and decide that must mean equality has been reached because they are jealous of their income and perceived lifestyle. They don't see the discrimination and risks with police, etc. so they don't acknowledge they exist.

Here is the third verse to My Old Kentucky Home. I wonder how DeSantis would like to be sold away from his family to work in the sugar cane fields. [Verse 3] The head must bow and the back will have to bend Wherever the darkies may go A few more days and the trouble all will end In the field where the sugar-canes grow A few more days for to tote the weary load No matter 'twill never be light A few more days till we totter on the road Then my old Kentucky home, good-night! Tim Scott's response is unbelievable. But Scott noted that any of the benefits the curriculum suggested enslaved people had would have also been held by free people. Still, Scott said that “people have bad days,” suggesting that DeSantis may have regretted his defense of the curriculum and urging reporters to ask him again about his thoughts on the policy. www.politico.com/news/2023/07/27/no-silver-lining-in-slavery-scott-slams-desantis-on-florida-curriculum-comments-00108698

I'd have more respect for Scott if he hadn't softened it by saying DeSantis may have just had a bad day. Call it for what it is DeSantis is a racist piece of shit.
But that would probably backfire on him on the campaign road. This is a really good example of the hidden racism in our society. An African American trying to run for president in the Republican party doesn't dare actually call DeSantis a racist piece of shit. He has to soften his statement by defending his white competitor and making the message more palatable for other white people to hear.
