The Canadian Government just passed a law that social media platforms have to pay news outlets for using their content. I guess like royalties going to musicians or something. So now the social media platforms are going to block all the articles from local news outlets. The news outlets are not impressed, at least not my local newspaper (not really a paper anymore, I get the email everyday, but I don't know what we call that entity these days) So I am really hoping they, the government, finds a way to back out of this one.

I heard about this yesterday, from my friend in Vancouver. what she said was that it was just search engines. as in, they won't provide Canadian news content in search results. can you share a link? I'm curious about this difference. thanks!

It’s just Facebook and Google that are removing all Canadian news organizations and maybe whatever else is included with Meta.
A number of media companies are for this bill and have stated that they pulling all of their ads off of Facebook and Google in response to Meta’s actions.

Oh right. Google and Facebook aren’t the same entity but still I don’t know that I care if they pack their tents and leave at this point.
I’ll just make sure I have the address for everyone I normally check on. The Neighborhood Facebook page will just have to comment things like “if you’re wondering why all the cops are up the Hart, go to media name” instead of posting a link.
Either everyone will go back to negotiating or people will find a work around.

like, blocking people from posting them? or discontinuing having those media outlets as "sponsored" posts? I'm so confused

For certain they won’t be doing those “suggested for you” spots. Apple News has moved on so I can’t find the article I read yesterday. It had more info than the Yahoo article that Laterbloomer linked to.
Going by my memory, they felt the wording left them open to royalties for too many instances they had no control over. If I stumble across it again, I’ll try a link but I expect it will be paywalled except through my Apple News account
