Those extra layovers would cost you more than $20 in food, snacks, drinks. Also if I booked a flight with 2 connections we better be going somewhere amazing like Australia. I have my own issues but spending on travel is not one of them. I think it helps that my maternal grandma is beyond cheap. Her grandmother drank hot water at home because coffee costs money. Supposedly there was free senior coffee at McDonald's in those days. This has been verified by my mom and all her siblings. We are working on increasing savings but I don't want to refuse to spend money on things we would enjoy. Those extra layovers would cost you more than food and drink. Every time you have a layover, you run the risk of getting to spend the night there. Then you are out a hotel and meals (as I refuse to sleep on airport seats, my body’s not 25 anymore). I remember a time when I would fly to Burlington VT from San Antonio via Denver and Chicago. It was a shade cheaper, but probably not when weather canceled flights for me in both of these cities. The more direct flight was a little cheaper. I was a dumbass back then.

It's problem when you're still doing it when you have millions in the bank. It screams you don't value your time and you are literally wasting your time from your loved ones and just being stupid cheap.

My dumbass comment was that by saving $20, I took the risk of needing to lay out 5x that amount for a hotel room. Considering I was doing this over Christmas, it was happening every few years. I definitely wasn’t coming out ahead! But you are correct, $20 was a lot more to me then. When we had to fly to FL for the cruise in Dec., I deliberately chose a direct flight. One was to avoid getting caught some place due to lousy weather (which happened to a lot of people on the cruise, including a couple who wound up having to meet the ship in Cozumel) plus we had to check luggage and I had visions of my luggage not making it to FL on time.

When I fly cross-country to join my GF, I generally prefer to have a connecting flight. Yes, it usually saves a little bit, but that isn't the reason. I'm not willing to pay for first class, and often get switched to an exit row anyway. Either way, I'd rather split the length of the flight into two segments so I can walk around for a while instead of being stuck in a seat for so long. More importantly, I can fly to her city and have her pick me up at a smaller airport 12 minutes away from her house (and at a convenient time), rather than having her drive an extra hour in rush-hour traffic to a larger airport where I would arrive on a non-stop. She always prefers a non-stop herself, but is then left with paying an exorbitant amount for transportation to the house. That's not me. I do draw the line at one connection though. I'm not crazy!
