I know people I used to work with did this. 

One man bought a camping lamp, used it for the weekend then returned it.  Wickedly bragged about it and put down the store.  I told him that store supported my S, DIL and children.

I have heard of stores limiting the amount of returns a person can make.  I've had friends who purchase a bunch of items, try them on at home then return them.  They could also be doing the buy, wear, return.

I have never done that. But I used to hear people brag about buying something, wearing it and taking it back. I'm not doing that period, just won't.

I used to work with a girl who did this a lot. She always was dressed nicely and wore new clothes. The business we worked at was near 2 malls, so she had a lot of places to choose from. Eventually she was caught and no longer allowed to shop at a number of stores.
It's not something I would do. Just doesn't seem ethical.

Macy's in one of the malls I frequented cracked down on something similar years ago. Because of their location, small budget films used to come, buy clothes for a shoot, and then return them. Fraud detection started finding them by dollar amounts and the amount of items they bought. Since this was considerably pre-pandemic, they had to have someone return them in person. This is why Macy's and other stores I think started tracking your returns. Once you hit some trigger point, all returns from you are refused. And like TMR posted, you might be banned from that chain entirely.


I currently have a bunch of things I bought from Land's End on sale. Its a lot for me. That said, this year they have a light blue color I really love and it will be hard to find once they discontinue it. So I think at least three of the items I ordered are that color. It was more than I preferred to spend, however, I already lost out on this print that I would have loved to have in this mesh polo shirt. You can find it on other items, but it is sold out in several items and per current Land's End buying patterns when it comes to prints, I do not think it will be restocked. I missed the window of opportunity for that particular type of polo shirt in that print.    I have an old Hawaiin shirt I need to retire to a clothing bin, and I was hoping to have that be the replacement.

I wash all clothes before I wear them, so no.

A neighbor did this when I was growing up.  Apparently she used to brag about it at the morning coffee with the ladies.

Mom made such a big deal about it and how it was theft, that I never even thought about it.

I've worked for a couple of major retail chains, and people pulling stuff like this is the reason why some items, like prom dresses, can no longer be returned.  I can't even imagine wearing a nice dress, then returning it & expecting a full refund.  Gross!
