Hundreds gather at Florida school board meeting over Disney movie controversy: 'Your policies are not protecting us from anything'

Florida teachers and community members packed a Hernando County School Board meeting Tuesday amid national furor over an investigation into a fifth-grade teacher who showed a Disney movie in her classroom.

Jenna Barbee, a teacher at Winding Waters K-8, alleged earlier this month that Hernando County School Board member Shannon Rodriguez reported her to the Florida Department of Education for showing her students the 2022 movie "Strange World" – one of the first Disney films to have an openly LGBTQ+ character in a central role.

The school board and state department of education both opened an investigation into Barbee, who has argued that the Disney movie related to a class Earth science lesson and did not show sexually inappropriate content. The animated movie follows a family of explorers on an adventure to save a plant that is their society’s source of energy.

Lisa Masserio, president of the Hernando Classroom Teachers' Association, said Tuesday's agenda had 33 resignations of "educators leaving our district, possibly leaving teaching entirely, after what they've experienced this year."

According to Masserio, the number of resignations have doubled since May 2022. She said the current political climate and politically motivated attacks have affected educator morale, "making educators question whether this is the right place for them."

WFLA-TV reported that Barbee is one of nearly 50 teachers planning to resign from the school district. A district spokesperson told the outlet on May 18 that the district had 150 unfilled instructional positions.

Little girls will want to be boys! Or they’ll only want to marry boys in dresses! Or they become sexually confused!!!

One of the moms whose kids went through the Princess process commented on line at how great the fairy godmother assistant was, and how he reassured her daughter who was nervous about nail polish.

By the way, this is where you pay 250 - 500 for a dress and your daughter get the full glam treatment- hair do, nail polish, modest make up, etc. I don’t think the excited little girls care at all that one of the assistants has a goatee.

A number of you know I used to work in the retail industry, both in the office & on the sales floor.  I think some folks in Florida, and other ultra-conservative states would be shocked at how many LGBTQ folks work in the fashion industry.  Some of the men are better at applying make-up than the women.  It didn't bother me, but I'll wager some of the pearl-clutchers would have a heart attack if they ever figure out some of the best designers of women's clothing are male. 



Yes, the school districts are a hot mess right now.  Between what you "can" and "cannot" teach in school, and the fear of violence at school, in my own community I'm seeing more parents home-schooling their children.  I'd hate to have to be a teacher in the current environment.

Pretty sure that is the point.  They can then turn around and use the shortage as a justification for why the public education system is a sham and must be dismantled. 

Then the only people who have access to education are those with privilege who will be carefully indoctrinated to only follow that which continues to prop up their privilege.   Everyone else will finally be put back in their proper societal place.

I'd be a teacher now, but not in a conservative state. Blue state and possibly blue area, because I would give them a heck of a stare down before I launched into what I thought. 

It would be hard not to resign when the fearful and angry come out and the happy or don't care that much stay home.

While the administration/school board can be a pain in the ass to work with, it's the "empowered" parents who think they know what's best that really drive the teachers away. Many say they're going to "home school" but often after pulling their kids out for 3-6 months, they bring them back and expect the teachers to fix everything they screwed up. It's pretty sad, and enough to drive most out of teaching (my wife could make more at Walmart than teaching, with less stress).

She's ready to head out the door after 30-years, the district has been trying to hire her replacement and has had zero luck! She's now talking about staying for one more year to help them out...that's the kind of dedication most teachers have if people would just get out of the way and let them do their job.

This is the school board meeting where my nephew spoke. And came out as gay. As I mentioned on the Anonymous board, I am very proud of him, both for coming out and defending an educator against the tyranny of the tiny-minded school board member who claimed the film "indoctrinated" her 10-year-old and stole her innocence. There is a change.org petition with over 24,000 signatures on it to remove this ignorant political soapbox stooge from her position on the board.

I don't have kids in any school district. However I pay both state and local taxes that support public education. Public schools are set up to educate our society's children with our tax dollars. I do have a right to say what is taught. Educators need to be strong advocates for best practices but ultimately they are public employees under an elected school board. And they are members of the public who, in off hours and while being careful to not suggest in any way they are acting in an official capacity, can help elect stronger board members.

My father's (an army sergeant who got his leg blown apart in Vietnam) theory was that he'd shoot the first one and the rest would behave. He didn't think he'd be a good teacher, so he did not entertain going into that career.
