It used to be called Decoration Day cause that was the day we went to decorate the graves of those who passed before us. It originally started with decorating Union Soldiers graves then it expanded to relatives & friends. Then it got changed to Memorial Day, but so many have no idea of the meaning behind it...it's just another 3 day weekend for them & a cookout & drinking party. So, let's not forget this Memorial Day...remember those who fought in our wars & didn't come home. Also remember those who did come home, but have been damaged in some way...physical and/or mental or both. Pass along the meaning to the younger generation so it isn't lost! Thank you to all of those who have fought...and to their families who have maintained the homes for them to return to.

Came across this video by chance last night. Well worth the time to watch it. About seven minutes long.

so this is a weird one for me. I'd chalk it up to immigrant ignorance, except this one's not on my dad here. Mom was born and raised in Boston... anyway, when I was a kid, I got piled in the back of the station wagon and we picked up all of the cemetery flats of flowers to do the rounds of the graves of those ancestors I'd never met. and we drove past the veterans' area, and the infants' area with the places not even marked, every.damn.year like clockwork.....I think I was in jr hs when I realized Memorial Day wasn't about memorializing my own family. b/c I was never taught this.
I know now, but...?

I remember those in my family that went before me. And all the service members in all branches whether federal or local as well as their families who served in a different way. The people who stayed in America and kept the country running for our freedoms are also remembered.
