Rush is one of those bands I don't think I adequately understand enough to appreciate. For those who do not like Rush, I suggest turning off the sound and taking in the lyrics and their videos. The song that got them a record deal was Working Man. I don't fully remember the below, but I like and appreciate it.
Feel free to share other bands and music you don't fully understand or appreciate, but would like to.

I had to think about the question.
I don't fully understand (the fan's passion for) or appreciate The Beach Boys.
I love when songs include harmonies. And the Beach Boys totally have that - really amazing even without all the dubs and layers. I like Phil Spector's "wall of sound" thing. But, I cannot listen to several Beach Boy songs in a row without feeling like I need to commit violence. I can handle ONE Beach Boys song - and then I need to hear something else.
I have no musical education - so I don't know when a song or a singer are doing something clever musically. But, I'm pretty gosh darn sure the Beach Boys are doing neat stuff (even without the Spector Sound) when they sing.
Since I can't really listen to, say, an album side of a Beach Boys record without feeling violent... I have a hard time appreciating their music. I grew up in the era before "mix tapes" and spotify where you can create your own "playlist"*
Here's some amazing harmonies:
*for the record, I do have some Beach Boy songs in playlists - usually only 1 per play list.
I can't get enough of the Mcgarrigles. Or Linda Rondstat, Dolly Parton, and Emmylou Harris harmonizing together. I can't get enough of the Civil Wars. I LOVE the unlikely vocal harmonies of the original BoDeans recordings. I could go on and on with other bands/singers, But the Beach Boys? a couple of songs and I'm ready to kill people.

The only concert I have left after two song was Beach Boys. Horrible live but then never a big fan and only went to concert because friend had free tickets from her boss! We looked at each other and said let’s go.

I think we all have things that are us, things that are ok in small doses or whatever. And I think that's more than OK. its fine. I like the Beach Boys but I don't see myself listening to an entire album straight through nor do I see myself listening to more than two Rush songs in a row. The person who had me look into Rush also had me listen to Blue Oyster Cult. The latter was more me.
I think that's the cool thing about being individual. I do not think Rush is over-rated but I do think I can appreciate some of their magnificence without having the desire to listen to them as much as true Rush fans. I hope that makes sense.

It goes a little further for me. A personal example is Nirvana. I know they did incredible stuff, and have no interest in listening to them at all. Just not my style.

I totally get that. It's like "liking" something is a competition - if you can't meet or beat the other person's "love" of something you don't really like the thing or the other person. I don't think that's the way it works. It's ok to like things in small doses or on a more "once in a while" schedule. Everyone liking the same things seems kind of "boring" to me. It's more interesting when people share some things in common but have other things they like, too. ADDED: Just because I don't care for some musical style or artist - doesn't mean NO ONE should be able to listen to it.

And just because it's Friday night and I'm in a Bootsy Collins kind of mood (p-funk bass lines!) Everybody dance!
Here's some great house and club/dance music from IDK? 1986?
Deee-Lite - Groove Is In The Heart feat. Bootsy Collins & Q-Tip
If that's too much - check out youtube for some James Brown music/videos
And yeah, the Girls can do it too (play bass) Here's the TomTom Club's Genius of Love!
(Yeah, I spent my 20's listening to off the wall new age, punk, new wave, and ska bands but sometimes you just gotta feel the funk! )

Feel free to share other bands and music you don't fully understand or appreciate, but would like to.I have a strange love affair with the band Alt-J.... I love it and then I don't. I own their albums. I listen to it on Spotify. But I can't describe it or how it makes me feel. There's so much going on.. the lyrics, the music, the singers voice... It's like it's different every time I listen... This might hurt your ears (or make your brain scream - it breaks a lot of the 'music rules' we're use to.) None of my friends will listen to it. Here's info about them and some of their songs: Alt-J: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert FYI: NPR Music Tiny Desk concerts are great! There's lots and lots of them.

I love everything from Brahms, Bach Beethoven to heavy metal. But I’ve been thru so many generations of music! Like a little of all kinds of music. Some just more than others Music was one way to communicate with a snot nosed teenager back then. And we still talk music to this day. Music is very subjective. ETA. Love threads like this because always introduced to new artist not familiar with.
