She was both a survivor and a truly talented artist. She was a nice person too. (I worked with the wife of a stage crew member of one of her opening acts.) She was filled with enough energy for a room full of people. She will be missed. Now I need to go play one of her CD's...

It's not often a singer/musician gets the first ten minutes of the national evening news. But Tina Turner did on ABC's Evening news.
Well deserved recognition.

I read this yesterday: “I pay taxes here (in the US). My family is here,” she told CNN’s Larry King in 1997. “I left America because my (biggest) success was in another country and my boyfriend was in another country. Europe has been very supportive of my music.” link Not sure on citizenship issue.

I read that she had not even seen her two surviving sons (Ike’s sons that she had adopted when she was still married to Ike) in over 20 years.

I have to ask: did the two sons she adopted in the '60s or '70s (she divorced Ike in 1978) ever think of traveling to Switzerland to see her? It's not as if the sons were minors twenty years ago.

whoever wrote that didn't research it very well. Switzerland has allowed for dual citizenship since 1992. so, she could have become a citizen of Switzerland without renouncing her US citizenship. in addition, foreign nationals can own property in Switzerland. but only a permanent resident or a citizen can own a permanent residence there. she was already a PR before she became a citizen. so, yeah- this fails at a couple of levels.

Hard to know what really happened. She moved to Switzerland in 1995 and maintained businesses here in the US.

i agree. it is hard to tell. judging by her public statements, she lost all interest in the US.
NOTE: because the US is one of two nations on Earth that taxes you even if you are no longer a resident of the country, she may have decided she was tired of giving away money to a country she no longer had any interest in being part of.

It’s not something I’ve done a lot of research on, but I get the sense that historically, a lot of African American music artists had more support from fans in Europe, than in the US. IIRC, that was true especially for jazz artists. So even though Tina Turner wasn’t a jazz artist, I can see that being true for her too. So why not move somewhere where you and your art are appreciated more than the place you call home? And your beau lives there too? I’d probably have done the same if I was her.

So why not move somewhere where you and your art are appreciated more than the place you call home? And your beau lives there too? I’d probably have done the same if I was her. it is way easier to make a living as a musician in Europe for three major reasons. the first is that they take music and art more seriously than we do. no joke. the second is that they pay musicians better. and finally, the cost of living there is lower than here. it is almost impossible to make it here as a musician. it is quite possible to do so there. EDIT: also, the cities are closer together than in the US. and public transportation is better. so you can move from city to city to venue to venue less expensively.

I think he was in music. While it is a huge home. There easily could have been multiple recording studios etc. on the property. Pic of her and her german husband, date unknown by me.

Beautiful story. I heard a bit watching the news with perhaps CBS interviewing Gayle and Oprah remotely. He gave her a kidney in 2017. Wonderful love story, now I think I want to read her book. people.com/music/who-is-erwin-bach-tina-turner-husband/Bach was an executive with the European record label EMI, which worked with acts like Queen, Paul McCartney, Pink Floyd and Radiohead. Turner worked with EMI to distribute her music overseas.
The label broke up into smaller companies in 2012. Before its dissolution, EMI was one of the largest record labels in the music industry.
Turner and Bach met in 1985 at the airport in Düsseldorf, Germany. Bach was sent by EMI to greet the singer as she arrived. In the 2021 HBO documentary Tina, the couple said they had an instant connection from the moment they locked eyes.
"Her manager Roger [Davies] asked me to pick up Tina," Bach recalled in the documentary.
"So Roger said to me, 'Tina, you ride with Erwin,' and I wanted to go, 'Yay!' " Turner added with a laugh. "He was really so good-looking. My heart [was beating fast] and it means that a soul has met, and my hands were shaking."
The pair began a romantic relationship that same year. When Turner and Bach met, he was 30 years old at the time. Turner was 47.
