deadline.com/gallery/2023-cannes-film-festival-premieres-photos/Not sure if anyone else follows the film festival scene or the films that show up there first. I would like to see the film Elemental. I like happy animated films. The biggest names in cinema are converging on France for the 76th Cannes Film Festival. Things kicked off with the official poster being installed at the at Palais des Festivals as jury president Ruben Östlund and this year’s jury gathered at the Hotel Martinez for the Opening night dinner.
This year’s jury includes Moroccan director Maryam Touzani; French actor Denis Ménochet; British-Zambian screenwriter and director Rungano Nyoni; American actress, director and producer Brie Larson; American Actor and director Paul Dano; Afghan writer and filmmaker Atiq Rahimi; Argentinian director and screenwriter Damián Szifrón and French director Julia Ducournau.
The Jury will have the task of awarding the Palme d’Or to one of the 21 films in the Competition. The awards will be unveiled on May 27th at the closing ceremony followed by Peter Sohn’s animated film Elemental.
The Festival will officially kick off tomorrow, Tuesday, May 16, with the world premiere of the Johnny Depp-starring film Jeanne Du Barry, which is the curtain raiser for the opening ceremony.

www.euronews.com/culture/2023/05/16/cannes-film-festival-2023-preview-whos-coming-whats-showing-and-why-were-excited10) Firebrand (Competition) Brazilian-Algerian director Karim Aïnouz adapts Elizabeth Fremantle’s 2013 novel 'Queen’s Gambit' for what feels like his big international break, after previously having directed many documentaries and video essays, as well as 2019’s underseen The Invisible Life of Eurídice Gusmão – which premiered in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard selection. The director assembles an all-star cast for Firebrand, which sees Jude Law as Henry VIII and Alicia Vikander as his last wife, Catherine Parr – the only one to survive the king’s divorcing and beheading penchants. The film is described as a “horror historical drama” and Aïnouz has stated it’s a “potboiler”. It could very well be the Competition title to keep a close eye on when it comes to accolades.

Interesting video on the history of France. I'm only 1/3 of he way through, but find it interesting that France had so much of Europe's population in the past. According to the video 1 in 5 people lived in France in the 1700s and earlier than that the population of France exceeded the population of Russia. I blame Bing, which showed me part of the French Riveria because of Cannes ... and then a slight rabbit hole into videos. Enjoy or ignore, your choice.
