Dame Edna-RIP. Barry Humphries, performer who embodied Dame Edna, dies at 89Barry Humphries, an Australian comedian who created and embodied the lilac-coiffed, cat-eye-bespectacled Dame Edna Everage, a character that began in the 1950s as a satire on suburbia and evolved into a global goddess of bling and irreverence who performed for British royalty and on Broadway stages, has died in a Sydney hospital at 89. The death was confirmed by the hospital on April 22, but no other details were immediately provided. Mr. Humphries was hospitalized for complications after hip surgery. The persona of Dame Edna was so complete that the character was better known than its creator. Edna’s world grew to have its own rich backstory — with a published “autobiography”— that included remembrances of a dead husband, Sir Norman Everage, and an infant daughter taken by a “rogue koala” but who escaped to become a nun. Mr. Humphries came up with it all. Complete article here: Barry Humphries, performer who embodied Dame Edna, dies at 89

I did not realize Dame Edna started in the 50s. 1960 was 62 years ago, so he was very young and brave. Though in some ways that time was more accepting. Makes me even more sad that the USA is going backwards.

Aw, I enjoyed Dame Edna. I'm sure some members of the GOP are pearl clutching, but I thought his comedy act was hilarious.

I remember him/her back in the sixties. I was a teen then and it would not surprise me if I saw him/her on the Ed Sullivan Show.
I picked the video in the OP because I saw it just the other day. I thought it was funny as heck. Probably a TV news piece he was in failing health.

A king AND queen of comedy, no matter how you look at it. Make 'em laugh in heaven, Dame Edna. You will be missed.
