This was literally my first thought when I heard about this shooting. Someone at that school abused this woman, and she came back for revenge. I don't understand why she would target children though, unless they just got in the way of the people she was after. Or she could just be very mentally unstable. With a school shooting, one guess as to why it happened, is as good as any other. We may never know. My guess is, even as I’m typing this Marge Greene is hammering out a blistering screed claiming this is what happens when you ‘butcher’ young boys to immorally convert them to women - it makes the kid insane. And of course, as evil, God forsaken people, trans people target Christian schools. To which I would say - wouldn’t it be a good idea to introduce some gun control to that the insane people can’t get their hands on guns? & nbsp;Or are we just going to hammer the trans people? I imagine the governors of Florida, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Texas and other anti-trans states will come up Sith a new gun law to take away the firearms from trans-psople.

Well at least this time Repubs can't claim it is because we are demasculating young men by asking for equality, or that we are disenfranchising them because girls don't want to have sex with them. No the argument is going to be we have been forcing women to be more masculine which goes against our nature and this is a warning sign of what is to come. It would really be better if we were all back in the home pregnant and raising babies like God intended. you guys have been playing GOP bingo too long.

DQ may have won this particular square. www.nytimes.com/2023/03/27/us/nashville-school-shooting-audrey-hale.html There was confusion about the gender identity of the assailant in the immediate aftermath of the attack. Officials used “she” and “her” to refer to the shooter, and Chief Drake said that the assailant identified as transgender.
Kristin Mumford, a police spokeswoman, said that the shooter had been born female but listed male pronouns on a LinkedIn profile, which suggested that the suspect was a transgender man. That profile had been active in recent months, with the user reacting to two posts about other people’s career updates.

This was the 129th mass shooting of the year. We surpassed 100 mass shootings on March 5th, faster than any year before.
And a GOP congressman did the usual response- shrugged and said whadda ya gonna do?
A majority of Americans want some kind of gun reform. When nothing happens it’s a failure of democracy.

The gap between GOP gun rights fantasy and Nashville's realityThe high-minded talk about "constitutional carry" hides how many arguments about gun rights are really about the right to look "cool." We’re still learning more about the tragedy that’s unfolded at The Covenant School in Nashville. But we know that, as of Monday afternoon, at least three children and three adults are dead. We know that the police have said the attacker was carrying “at least two assault-type rifles and a handgun.” And we know that in the state of Tennessee, lawmakers have been working to make it even easier to own guns. Not that there’s much more room to lower that bar. The state already has few restrictions in place as it is: no waiting period between between purchasing and receiving a firearm; no license or permit required to own a gun; no need to register a gun with the state; no need for a permit to carry a handgun, open or concealed, if you’re over the age of 21. And yet Tennessee Republicans are still trying to remove the barriers that remain. As part of a settlement in a lawsuit from the Firearms Policy Coalition, Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti cut a deal in January that made it legal for 18-year-olds to openly carry firearms. Last week, the state Senate passed a bill to codify that agreement into law. State Rep. Chris Todd, who supports the Senate bill, has called it a “civil right,” ignoring arguments that expanding access to guns for teenagers could lead to more killings. That matches with the rhetoric around “constitutional carry,” the gun lobby’s lofty way of saying that no permit should be needed to carry a concealed firearm. The doctrine is the basis of another bill that Todd is backing that would allow open-carry of any firearm, including high-powered rifles. Even testimony against the bill from the Tennessee Highway Patrol and the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security hasn’t dimmed support from Republicans. But there’s a wide and constantly growing disconnect between the high-minded rhetoric being thrown around and reality. It’s easy to say, as the Supreme Court has, that gun laws that don’t match up with 19th-century understanding of firearms are a threat to freedom. It’s likewise easy to claim that any restrictions on gun ownership invite despotism. It’s not like there’s been much of a chance in the last 30 years for the U.S. to try out the sort of reforms that keep mass shootings from happening at the same rate in any other country and see just how much “tyranny” ensues. What’s less palatable is how much of our gun policy is presaged on the idea that guns are cool. That they’re fun to own, fun to shoot and fun to pose with in the family Christmas card, like Rep. Andy Ogles did last year. Ogles’ district includes Nashville — but I doubt he’ll think twice about putting guns in the hands of his kids for next year’s card as well. That was the unspoken understanding behind the rapid spread of the AR-15, as The Washington Post detailed in an all-too-timely package on Monday. When the federal ban on assault weapons expired in 2004, gun manufacturers “saw a chance to ride a post-9/11 surge in military glorification while also stoking a desire among new gun owners to personalize their weapons with tactical accessories.” As the founder of one of the first companies to market the AR-15 told The Post: “We made it look cool. The same reason you buy a Corvette.” In the face of yet another senseless round of murder, we know what comes next. President Joe Biden has already called on Congress to reinstate the assault weapons ban. There will be an outpouring of grief and a moment of digital silence from groups like the National Rifle Association, which last year celebrated the growing reach of “constitutional carry” laws. And there will be no commiserate pause from Republicans in their ongoing quest to demonize even the smallest reform as an affront to American values. It would be somehow more palatable if Republicans like Chris Todd and Andy Ogles would just really say the truth behind their mission. They think that their toys, their totems of masculinity, their props for playing the hero, are more important than the lives lost. That it’s more important to keep the love of voters who would rather look cool and imagine that they’ll be the “good guy with a gun” who saves lives in a fictional crisis than actually saving lives amid our ongoing national crisis. The gap between GOP gun rights fantasy and Nashville's reality

So, basically their only restrictions on gun ownership is for people under age 21?
WTH with it not needing to be registered? So you have to register your vehicle, dog, & cat, but not a firearm? And yes, I did look, and you do have license your pets in TN, though it appears to be county dependent.

Tennessee governor is looking to change the age from 21 to 18 to open carry a weapon without a permit. Many 18-year-olds in Tennessee are still in high school.

Republican party:
- Homosexuality is a mental illness - Transgenderism is a mental illness - Being “Woke” is a mental illness - Gun violence is due to mental illness - All homeless people are either mentally I’ll or lazy
Also Republicans
- won’t fund any mental illness care or any health care in any way - continue to stigmatize mental illness and any treatment relating to mental illness - have no other suggestions on how to fight any of the problems they blame mental illness for

I saw this today: woof. I hate to say this, but if we didn't do anything after Sandy Hook, we're never going to change. sad reality, I'd say.

The articles I've read say emotional disorder, however it is possible mom and dad thought she had an emotional disorder because she wanted to change her identity to Aiden. Psych meds can cause homicidal and suicidal tendencies. At first I thought it might be a bad reaction to male hormones plus life stresses, but seeing pics of Hale I'm wondering if any hormones were even taken.

How does diagnosed mental illness work with background checks for buying firearms? Is that medical info included?
I’m asking because I have a legit concern. A guy I’ve worked with for at least 10 years was relieved of duty a few weeks ago because he allegedly called the job and threatened to kill a female coworker. They had been hanging out (as friends, he’s gay) they had a disagreement because she asked him to give him some hundreds of dollars, they got into it and she put him out of her car. Later that evening is when he supposedly called the job and made that threat. All of this is what my coworkers say happened. Neither of them have been back to work since.
He is a 100% disabled veteran with diagnosed mental illness, he says he has been diagnosed as being bipolar. He and I have talked a lot over the years, and he’s said he can’t buy firearms, I’m wondering if there is something specific in place to prevent people with mental illness from buying firearms. It’s come up because he feels vulnerable coming to work in the wee hours of the morning, when it’s still dark. He’s not been able to drive for a few years because he lost his license due to DUI’s, so he gets to work on scooters, bikes, walking, whatever, and he has to go through downtown to get to work. But even if he could buy a gun, he can’t bring it to work with him, so it’s kind of a moot point.
He’s basically a really good guy, he just has some serious issues. He’s shared a lot with me about himself and his life over the years, and I’ve never known him to be violent or even threaten violence. BUT, his job is really all he has, he doesn’t have friends. And his job gives him some structure and motivation to get right when he goes sideways. So I worry about what he might do if he gets fired, which the grapevine is saying he is.
I mostly think he is a bigger threat to himself than anyone else, and he has had suicidal thoughts before. Even though I’ve never known him to be violent, a part of me is still concerned that he might lose his shit and show up at the job since that’s all he has. Even if they have de-activated his badge, all of us know how to get inside the building without a badge.
I really don’t want to be like the people on the news that say they never thought that person would do something like that after they do something crazy. I feel like I know him pretty well, but still, you can’t really say what a person won’t do. I also don’t want to be a victim if he actually does do something crazy.

Depending on the state you are in is how in depth they go. The state that I live in does extensive checks. It was difficult to buy a firearm IF you have been treated for mental illness. But we have a new Repub governor and he has already dialed back the protection that people who had restraining orders against them could not purchase a firearm. Look up the laws for your state. I did not know how lax they were until the school shooting yesterday.

I think more than one of them used this event to call for no gender affirming care for kids, totally ignoring the fact its pretty obvious there was no gender affirming care as a child for Hale, and possibly not even as an adult. About as special as the FBI or former FBI agent that went on about side doors ignoring the fact Hale shot the doors out and walked through them. Apparently, the gun thing is too obvious for them.

A lot of the rules regarding firearms in TN have been relaxed recently, to my dismay. And I say that as someone that has exercised my right to own a gun at certain points in my life.

There is an article today on Radar Online about the shooter and their relationship with their parents.
First off all, they were 28 and living at home, apparently still subject to the parents rules. (They wanted to wear men’s clothes but had to wear female clothes at home, changing into male clothes outside the house). Why wouldn’t the parents let her move out? Disown her if she wasn’t following the course they wanted?
So the shooter is under her conservative parents house rules - they don’t accept she is transgender and gay. They had strict rules that suppressed her identity. They wouldn’t call the shooter Aiden or use male pronouns. The ended drawing up their murder plans, which included shooting up a mall and killing her family, if she hadn’t been stopped at the school.
Wish they could have just disowned her and pushed her out the door. I think this tragedy could be avoided. Wish this could be a warning to other conservative parents who refuse to allow their child to be gay or trans, but I’m guessing far right parents will just say the parents weren’t tough enough soon enough, that this is what happens when you give kids ‘ideas’ that they can change gender.
of course, if her parents had been able to put her on a black list so she couldn’t buy weapons, this would have been averted, too.

Speaking black lists the uncle of the kid who was trying to light people on fire talked about that. He and the parents have pleaded with the state to do something about the kid. He's been to numerous therapists and doctors who have also suggested institutionalization. The state says "meh not our problem"
But Nebraska will step in and protect the kid's God given right to own guns once he turns 18. The uncle said it's damn lucky all the kid did was try to light fires. The uncle is very concerned about when the kid turns 18 and can purchase weapons.

Think I'll wait for the analysis on the manifesto. Who knows why people do as they do.... but if she has written something about it then there may be clues. Although nothing and no-one will ever justify the deaths of these people..... including 3 little 9 year olds.

I'd like analysis on the manifesto, but I don't think it will do anything to help change future events like this. I'm beginning to believe that the people that plan these mass events originally start doing so as a way to not feel powerless. They are angry but do not see a way forward in their lives but are not depressed enough to commit suicide. So, its death by cop via the avenue of taking out other people. The best way of stopping it is gun registration, restricting certain gun purchases, and do not sell to lists. It won't stop everything, but trying to stop all the reasons someone might choose to do a mass shooting are too numerous and like this case we may not get much warning at all in advance. Apparently, Hale posted to a former teammate less than twenty minutes before she started shooting.

Nothing will change as long as the gun industry makes scads of money fearmongering.
They always sell a lot of weapons whenever there’s a mass shooting.
This time they have the fear of transgender people to throw oil on that flame.

UGH! I actually do believe in prayer, but I also believe that we are not supposed to just try to pray a situation away, or offer what I consider to be empty prayers, when there is something we can do about it. That’s not how that works Imo. You do what you can do that is within your ability and power to address a problem, and pray about the things that are beyond your control. I admit I may be misinterpreting it, but I believe that “faith without works is dead”. Which means to me, that faith is not just sitting back and waiting for what you pray for to fall down from the sky or magically happen. You do whatever is within your power to do, and have faith that what’s beyond your power to do, will make it all come together for the good. And if you are in a position of power, like a politician, where you can do what is truly right for your brethren, and you choose to spread hatred instead of love, and pretend you can’t do anything to help the most vulnerable among us….. while calling yourself a Christian, shame on you. To him whom much is given, much is expected.

hope without action is also dead. not keen on hope in the absence of action.
