I'm ...not sure how to say it....but twisted/concerned/ and a few more words .... They didn't listen, they wanted the higher yields...more $$$...Greed! Now they are sounding an alarm? Having been raised on a farm way back in the 50's, I'm not sure what they are talking about "not set up to raise conventional corn". The basic difference I see is what herbicides/pesticides can or can not be applied to those older crops. They wouldn't be able to use glyphosate or some of the other stronger chemicals that have now been approved. But just stop & think about how many products in our homes have corn in some form in them...like corn syrup as a sweetener....corn oil for cooking...corn in our pet foods. At least we don't have to worry any longer about having corn cobs (ground into mostly powder) added to our laundry detergents now...and yes, it used to be along with ground up feathers. www.msn.com/en-us/money/markets/us-farmers-sound-alarm-on-single-most-catastrophic-thing-headed-for-corn-crops/ar-AA16XbmP?cvid=04ddc17deebf4c7f813dd5589a88f410

So, the farmers are going to Capitol Hill to ask for more subsidies/handouts? How much do American Farmers rely on "government handouts" to survive? OK, the above is somewhat sarcastic... but there's a grain of truth in there... How much do American Farmers rely on government money? (and isn't that kind of communistic or socialist or something Republicans hate.... )

I know how many things we eat have corn/corn syrup/corn starch etc. in them, as I react very badly to it. My DH and I usually read labels pretty carefully.
My cousin's DH grows organic crops. If a farmer in a neighboring field sprays his corn on a windy day, it can invalidate his organic certification. The US laws say he has no recourse against the neighboring farmer. I am pretty sure our laws pretty much say that food labels cannot state one way or the other if the corn is GMO or not. Defiantly congress is very friendly to the Farm Lobby. who cares about the rest of us?
I read up on the GMO issue because I found some indication that a lot of people are having issue with corn, and it could be they are reacting to GMO corn. I should try eating some organic corn, but my reaction is so bad, I am not really interested in finding out one way or the other.

I have talked with a couple other folks about this article...and they agree with me. This is most likely something put together by either Monsanto or Bayer because they see their products may take a hit & it could spread world wide....leaving them "in a manner of speaking"...with their pants down.
As the other folks I chatted with agreed with me, there is no difference in how the seeds are planted, cultivated or harvested. It's all in how the soil is prepared ...by which pesticides & herbicides that can be applied to GMO'd seeds. This would also affect their monopoly on the seeds used and the fact that GMO'd seeds can't be saved by a farmer & planted the next year....they have to buy new seeds each year. So it might also take away the lynch rope the chemical companies have around the farmer's necks....and their wallets too.
Bean, I've have wondered over the last couple of decades if all the allergies we are now seeing aren't the result of many of these chemicals that are being used in ag. and also the changing of the DNA of the plants/seeds, or some other way the chemical companies have messed with nature.
Which always brings me back to one book EVERYONE should read....Silent Spring by Rachael Carson.

I'm not shedding any tears for Monsanto or Bayer. They painted themselves into this corner.

I'm not shedding any tears for Monsanto or Bayer. They painted themselves into this corner. And since glyphosate doesn't work or work well in many instances now, they have gotten stronger & more dangerous chemicals approved to be used....and are exposing ALL of us to them in one way or another. In the air when spraying, in the ground water as these chemicals seep down, in the crops that are treated with them...and those crops go into many, many food items & even as ethanol in our vehicle fuels....and then the exhaust that we breathe. And BTW, over use by homeowners on their lawns is the #1 reason for many chemicals showing up in out potable water (drinking water)....unless those figures have changed from about 3 yrs. ago.
