As soon as you have enough, you have too much.

It's hardly too much if its barely enough. Could you explain?

This didn't come out of anything in particular, just a conversation and a drunken musing ;D

To clarify- I wasn't drunk. DF and I were listening to this guy in a bar tonight talk about how every period in his life he felt he didn't have enough money was quickly followed by a period where he had "enough" compared to what he needed before- but then felt guilty about having "too much." I was intrigued. To me, "not enough" and "too much" mean just that.

As soon as you have enough, you have too much. Since I have never had too much, I must never have had enough.

Give me a couple bourbons and I'm sure I could wax philosophic right along with this guy. Since I've only had coffee this morning, I can appreciate the general sentiment but may not dust off the ole soapbox.
Two thoughts - 1. If you have enough money to do everything you have always been working/saving for, now what do you work/save for? That could be a major identity crisis right there. I've never been in the position to run out of goals, but I also don't intend to.
2. Once I stopped being a financial trainwreck, I was able to see just how fortunate I am. I may still have student loan and mortgage debt, but I am wealthier than most of the world (even if I am poorer than most of the folks on YM). As I got my fiscal act together, I felt an obligation to increase my charitable contributions.
(or, you know, he was drunk - he could have just gotten a backfiring raise that kicked him into a higher tax bracket or increased his child support payment or something)

The only time I had a "lot" of money was after my dear mother died and I had inherited one third of her estate. I had no money worries at that moment, but I felt guilty because I had benefited from her death. ( She died at the age of 78 after getting a subarachnoid hemorrage, so there was no question of any funny business, in case anyone was wondering ) Mom's death was sudden although she had Alzheimers/Parkinsons which would have eventually been fatal, so in some ways, her death was a relief to her. I felt terrible about having that much money all of a sudden, and gave some to charities. I went and talked to a counselor for a couple of hours, and got a couple of books on inheritances, and after reading them, I felt better. It was very difficult at the time, though. So, at that time of my life, I had "enough", but in some ways, I had "too much", because I was conflicted about my mother's death. I wanted my mother back.

I've had too much and not enough simultaneously. I'm in that position now - more than enough money to meet our needs (and make me feel guilty when I complain) but not enough money to meet my wants. Like having my mom move in next door, quit her job, and hang out with DS and her four cats.
