has died. Loretta Lynn, the Kentucky coal miner’s daughter whose frank songs about life and love as a woman in Appalachia pulled her out of poverty and made her a pillar of country music, has died. She was 90.
In a statement provided to The Associated Press, Lynn's family said she died Tuesday at her home in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee.
“Our precious mom, Loretta Lynn, passed away peacefully this morning, October 4th, in her sleep at home in her beloved ranch in Hurricane Mills,” the family said in a statement. They asked for privacy as they grieve and said a memorial will be announced later.
As a songwriter, she crafted a persona of a defiantly tough woman, a contrast to the stereotypical image of most female country singers. The Country Music Hall of Famer wrote fearlessly about sex and love, cheating husbands, divorce and birth control and sometimes got in trouble with radio programmers for material from which even rock performers once shied away.
Her biggest hits came in the 1960s and '70s, including “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” “You Ain’t Woman Enough,” “The Pill,” “Don't Come Home a Drinkin' (With Lovin' on Your Mind),” “Rated X” and “You're Looking at Country.” She was known for appearing in floor-length, wide gowns with elaborate embroidery or rhinestones, many created by her longtime personal assistant and designer Tim Cobb.
“It was what I wanted to hear and what I knew other women wanted to hear, too,” Lynn told the AP in 2016. “I didn’t write for the men; I wrote for us women. And the men loved it, too.”

RIP and congrats on a life well lived. She made it to 90 yrs old, and while I am sad, she is now gone, I am grateful she was here.

This has hit me really hard today. She was one the first women to address hard hitting issues affecting women in country music.

This isn't as reverential as would be appropriate, but you really should check out the lyrics or the video to "The Pill". It was recorded in 1972, not released until 1975, and not played on the radio.
FWIW, the pill came around in 1958 or so. That's some serious decades of silence and censorship. This really does not surprise me much since I was born in 1968 and have my own memories of what was taboo not so long ago but I wish to draw attention to it nonetheless. What could not be said when I was young still shocks me and it is rather unusual to get some sort of verification regarding what could not be said.
If you do the math, she may have written the song only after her fertility had waned. This should chill you.

Scroll down in the article and there is a video of Chapel Hart singing one of her songs as requested by Loretta. www.yahoo.com/news/she-died-loretta-lynn-asked-220530568.htmlNow, Chapel Hart is honoring Lynn by honoring one of her final requests: putting their own twist to Lynn’s classic “Fist City.”
“We know you had to go but don’t you worry, mama, you left country music in good & capable hands!” Chapel Hart posted to Facebook Tuesday, along with a video of their recent performance of the song.

Just watched an American Masters special on her last night on PBS. I'm sure it was a repeat, but if you have any interest in her life, it's well worth 2-hours of your time. She lead a fascinating life.
