Russian Officials Demand Putin Resign Amid Ukraine LossesRussian officials are calling on Russian President Vladimir Putin to resign amid mounting losses in his invasion of Ukraine—a rare sign of frustration as the Kremlin cracks down on dissent. The Russian leader launched the invasion of the Eastern European country more than six months ago on February 24. Russian officials hoped their large military would lead them to a quick victory, but Ukraine met them with a strong defense effort bolstered by aid from its allies including the United States. This has prevented the Kremlin from achieving its major goals. In recent weeks, Ukraine has gone on the offensive in areas near Kherson and Kharkiv, taking back more than 1,000 miles of formerly occupied territory. The Kharkiv counteroffensive caught Moscow by surprise, and Ukrainian victories forced Russian forces to retreat from key cities such as Izyum over the weekend in which some Russian supporters described as the most "difficult" day of the war. These losses appear to be leading to increased dissent against Putin. Thirty-five Russian municipal deputies signed a petition demanding him to resign from office due to the "harm" inflicted onto Russia due to the invasion, tweeted Ksenia Tortstrem on Monday, who serves as a municipal deputy in St. Petersburg's Smolninskoye municipal territory. There is nothing more dangerous than an injured Russian bear.
He needs a way out of this and he needs to save face.
China are not going to support him.

It would be good if he resigned, but he's stubborn. His health is bad, and I wonder if it has affected his thinking.

I can’t imagine troops jerked out of their normal lives (or jails) and suddenly thrust into uniform and dropped at the front lines (some in old tanks Russia took out of mothballs) are going to be very motivated fighters. Especially since their government has apparently not really explained the reason behind invading Ukraine to begin with. Some of the troops thought this was supposed to be training maneuvers. And that the Ukrainians would be glad they were there. Wonder how many of these new recruits just put their weapons down and go AWOL across the lines.

Russia. that is who. We can't ignore it, its getting worse. His behaviour is becoming increasingly erratic and there are already calls for him to step down over his warmongering and lack of progress. nypost.com/2022/09/13/putin-faces-calls-to-resign-over-ukraine-war/Though the dissenters aren't being treated too well. Those that are resisting the "call up" are threatened 10 years in prison.

Russia can't win this.......and it's falling apart.
That makes him very dangerous.
(Although it could end tomorrow if they sat down and talked)
The Kremlin is quite "coup proof".... so we'll have to see what happens in the next couple of months.

Putin is sick. We don’t know how sick or how long he can expect to live, but he might be in the frame of mind that he would rather go out with a bang and not a whimper. He does have kids, though. Let’s hope he cares enough about them he won’t choose the nuclear option.

US embassy in Russia tells Americans to leave the country
The U.S. embassy in Russia is urging Americans in the country to leave and warning U.S. citizens to not travel to Russia after Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a call-up of 300,000 reservists to aid depleted forces in Ukraine. The embassy said in a security alert on Wednesday that Russia may prevent U.S. citizens from leaving the country and conscript dual nationals into military service. Russia may also refuse to acknowledge dual nationals’ U.S. citizenship or restrict their access to U.S. consular assistance, officials said. Many flights booked up and prices soared after Putin announced a call-up of reservists for the first time since World War II. Russian forces have sustained heavy losses throughout the war, especially since Ukraine launched a counteroffensive earlier this month through which it has regained thousands of square kilometers. The U.S. embassy said on Wednesday that flights are extremely limited and often unavailable on short notice, but overland routes by car and bus are still open. The embassy added that it is severely limited in its ability to help U.S. citizens, and people should make independent arrangements as soon as possible. The State Department maintains a page on its website to provide information on commercial travel out of Russia. Officials also said U.S. citizens should remember that the right to peacefully assemble and freedom of expression are not guaranteed in Russia, and they should avoid all social or political protests and not take pictures of security at the protests. Russian authorities have arrested Americans who have participated in the protests. The embassy also said in the security alert that U.S. citizens should carry proper identification, including a U.S. passport and current Russian visa, and have a contingency plan not reliant on U.S. assistance. US embassy in Russia tells Americans to leave the country Yeah I heard this AM that they are going to the roads where the Russians are attempting to leave and handing out conscription notices. At the same time Russians are calling Ukraine asking how they can surrender. I can’t believe there hasn’t been a coup. Someone referred to the Kremlin as coup-proof, but I can’t believe that’s possible. I’m sure there are plenty of Russians wanting to bring this nonsense to a halt.
