There’s a big college football game scheduled tomorrow, and a lot of fun stuff to do this weekend. It’s been a tradition for about 30 years, and there will be a lot of people here from out of town. Neither of the colleges are actually in Memohis. It’s a big weekend that brings a lot of money to the city. This is the last year this game will happen.
A lot of people that live here are saying they are staying home the entire weekend. People are still on edge because of what happened Wednesday, and there are copycats making threats saying they are planning to go on shooting sprees. The police have posted on FB asking if anyone can identify the young men in the picture. They are looking for them for making “terroristic threats”. I saw that post from the police with my own eyes, so there are definitely at least those wanna be copycats for real.
I also saw a screenshot of a FB post “The Aryan Freedom Network” made, saying “In response of the shooting in Memphis Tennessee committed by a n!&&#@ Thug…” “… The Aryan Freedom Network will also be responding by doing armed patrols in the White areas in the city of Memphis to protect Whites from Black Violence.” Those are direct quotes, I screenshot it myself. Idk who they’re supposed to be, but wtf.
Instead of being the fun weekend that it’s always been when the game happens, it will be a weekend of fear and potential murder and mayhem. And a loss of revenue from people being afraid to leave home, when this weekend usually generates a lot of revenue.
Mister asked if our neighborhood is considered a “White” neighborhood. It’s obviously not, since we live here, but who knows how these fools define “White neighborhoods. We actually live in a suburb of the city, but it might be all the same to these fools.
I was actually a little nervous coming home from work today. I have to work this weekend, but if crazy stuff really does start happening, Imma have to make some decisions.
This is crazy.

Yes, you will have to make those decisions and I am so very sorry for that. It totally sucks that you and I and a lot of other folks can't do what we want to when we want to. But I think there will also be a lot of pushback, maybe more than usual turnout for stuff. The Aryan Freedom Network is trying to incite confrontations and they may be successful in some areas.

There was big gathering to “finish the run” for the jogger whose body was found the other day. I think it was last night. I’ve seen several posts from people who said they were afraid to go, but most of them ended up going anyway. From the pictures I’ve seen, a LOT of people showed up.
I’ve always been serious about trying to keep myself safe, but this is a whole ‘nother level. Being mindful of taking basic steps to try to be safe is pretty much just common sense to me, but being nervous and afraid to go about living my life is bad. Very bad.
My nerves are really bad.
On a good note, it seems that one of the young men the police were looking for, for making terroristic threats has been identified and arrested.
Those particular guys were saying they were going to kill old white women and their grandchildren if they had them with them. Most reports said they spoke about targeting specific individuals or something like that, without saying it was older white women. But people that watched the video (I didn’t watch it, I couldn’t) said who exactly they were threatening.
There already a lot of issues regarding race in this area. This didn’t make it any better, probably made it even worse. All the racist comments under posts about it, the fact that if they did do what they said, it would’ve been what even I consider “hate crimes” then the fact that some people feel it only got the attention it did to try to find them was only because they were specifically threatening white people…. Just a bunch of SHIT. Just because they said they would be looking to kill white people, did not make decent black people feel any better about it, or any safer. All the Black people I know just want this to be a safe place to live and work, for EVERYBODY, regardless of what they look like. They (we) don’t want violence PERIOD.
As far as all the threats of murder and mayhem, a teenager was found shot on the expressway a few hours ago. Idk what the circumstances were, if this is part of what has been threatened to happen. The news is only saying he was shot.
My heart is so heavy right now. And did I mention my nerves are really bad?

Being afraid to go about our daily lives lets the bad guys win. We cannot let them to continue to take over our neighborhoods. We need to take them back if not under our control.
We have to use our common sense when out and about. We need to be aware of our surroundings. We might not be able to take 'short cuts" to save time. When possible, be around other people. If possible, don't be find yourself alone in foreign or unlit places.
Travel in pairs when possible.
When stuck/stopped in traffic leave a car's length space between your vehicle and the car in front of you. That's the same length you need to pull out and get away if something bad is going down around you.
I'm sure there are ither suggestions on how to remain safe in today's world. Feel free to add some safety tips.

Feel free to add some safety tips. Almost everything you advised, are all things that are already my habits. I seriously avoid drive throughs with a single lane that has a barrier where you can’t drive off to the side if necessary. Those barriers aren’t as important when I’m in the Jeep as when I’m in my car, but the Jeep is also slow, and my car is much more responsive as far as speed, and much easier to maneuver without fear of tipping over on a corner or swerving. I don’t even sit with my back to an entrance when I’m out in public. Ever. And I always make note of possible exits. Always, without even consciously thinking about it. I don’t think I could ever totally relax if I lived in a house with an open floor plan because even at home, I’m more comfortable with my back against a wall, or even better, sitting or lounging in a corner. I just automatically do things like that, with how I position myself in any space, whether it’s due to nature or nurture. I just don’t feel like any of my habits will help protect me from somebody that is just going around shooting random people with no warning and for no reason. Even if I am armed, how does that help me if somebody randomly starts shooting at me while I’m driving on the expressway or on the streets?

Intimidation is an ugly, real, weapon deployed by bullies and other terrorists the world over. As a woman you already know the hundreds of ways to stay safe(r), and know that you can't eliminate the threat altogether. But having it color your world, all the people you know in your neighborhood and family and at work, really bites. I wish it were different. I wish all these people who threaten others had no way to convey their hate.
Be safe, be well.

@pinkcshmere - did you see this? MPD: Corteria Wright, believed to be a victim of Wednesday's shooting spree, actually died from a separate shooting that nightAs details from Wednesday night's shooting spree across Memphis come to light, Memphis Police have learned that one victim, 17-year-old Corteria Wright, identified by them as Corteria McKinnie, actually died of a separate shooting that night. Memphis Police said officers responded to a Memphis Fire station at 4715 Horn Lake Road Wednesday just before 7 p.m., where they spoke with the 17-year-old who said she was shot at the 800 block of West Raines Road. Video obtained by MPD showed a man wearing all black shoot into a white Chevrolet Malibu, occupied by McKinnie. I think the being a woman part matters, and has colored how I perceive the world and my need to try to keep myself safe. I remember a conversation here years ago with one participant being a lady who use to post here, milee, where we were talking about how the world is often a different world for women than it is men, and trying to get men to understand that. I also remember hoops, a man that use to post here, talking about how moving through the world is for him, being a tall, not skinny man. He was more confident of his ability to protect himself in most situations, apparently because of his size and because he would be closer to being on equal footing as far as strength and physical power goes with a potential assailant, than us women were. I believe it is difficult for many men to understand how different the world is or can be for women, because men tend to be bigger and stronger and better equipped physically to try to defend themselves, than most women are, just due to biology. So they don’t really get it sometimes. That is all generally speaking, not implying I think it’s absolute truth. There are some men that can’t fight their way out of a paper bag, and some women that can kick ass with the best of them.

I said you don't get it because you are a guy. Women know from a very early age if we don't moderate ourselves and constantly read the room the consequences can be deadly for us. He conceded my point. I wish men would wake up. What they are experiencing is what I live as a woman. Maybe, just a wild thought, the solution is change the damn world not go out and buy an even bigger gun so you can be the hero.

But I also understand what Tennesseer said, and I believe that is also true. But I also believe it works best when there are many people committed to it, vs a few people here and there. Just like with other things, there is strength in numbers. I also think that it would be wise for the city to invest in resources to try to get to troubled young people and help them, including addressing mental health, before they become monsters. We are going to pay either way. Either we pay to provide resources to help as many as we can get themselves together and become law abiding, productive citizens or we pay for all the ways it costs money to deal with them after they become criminals. And then we also pay the non monetary price of not feeling reasonably safe because of them. Memphis is considered a poor city, but somehow, the city leaders find money to spend on what they want to spend it on. There are many millions of dollars being spent right now to revamp the waterfront, again. I feel like that money would have been better spent dealing with the issues that lead to all the crime. And I don’t mean just hiring more police officers. Whose going to want to spend time on the river if they are afraid for their lives or being a victim of any kind of serious crime, no matter how beautiful the “improvements” make it? There’s nothing wrong with it right now, anyway. Address the real issues first, and that will increase revenue automatically because residents won’t be so afraid to be out and about (and spending money) and people won’t be afraid to travel to visit the city. THEN improve things like the waterfront again. But that’s just my opinions, I’m not an expert on anything. It just seems like common sense to me, but I could very well be misguided and/or plain ol’ wrong.

I meant to add that I don’t believe jail or prison time rehabilitates criminals. Of course, some people get a taste of being locked up and never want to go there again. But there are others that serving time doesn’t change them, and some that serving time just makes them worse.
The man accused of killing the jogger was locked up for years, and still did it again after he got out. The 19yo that was on the shooting spree Wednesday just got out 6 months ago. I saw a FB post where someone was talking about mental health and said they saw his FB page before it got removed and the signs were there, he’d experienced trauma after trauma. They didn’t elaborate on what kind of trauma, but he was only 17yo when he got his first serious criminal charges, and only 19yo Wednesday. If his history showed his life before his first known crimes were committed at 17yo, was shitty and traumatic, maybe if he’d received help for dealing with all of that, his life could’ve gotten on a different path than the one that led him to what he did Wednesday.
I am in no way trying to excuse what he did. To be honest, while it was happening, I actually hoped someone would kill him. I am just saying I think it matters to try to understand how people get to be that way, and that it would be in our best interests as a society to try to intervene and help them BEFORE they do crazy shit like that.
Just random thoughts.

What's the point in spending $$$ to revamp an area if folks are scared to go there or live near there? The battle for $$ to push tourist related stuff is constant. City leaders get a lot of pressure from local chambers of commerce and various business groups and the tourism industry. Those folks often have louder voice than local residents whose taxes fund those improvements. Since I didn't see anything on the news today, I'm guessing Memphis was quiet and I'm profoundly grateful for that

The entire US needs to invest more money in mental health issues. I don't know what is happening in Memphis on that front, but here in Iowa, the state legislature keeps cutting dollars, which means cutting programs.
It's been some time since I saw Paul McCartney in Memphis, but we had a nice lunch near the waterfront. I do remember we couldn't go all the way to the water because of flooding.

Just random thoughts. Among the many issues with our system, is the disgusting conditions that prisoners are subjected to. What a shock it was to discover what swedish prisons were like. College dorm rooms. Our prisoners live like rats in a sewer. Now - a very few do deserve that, but the majority don't and a lot more might be rehabilitated if circumstances were better. And they didn't come out worse than they went in. Just looked up "our murderer", looks like he was paroled this year and is in a "life skills reentry center" for the next two years. The board advised me not to reach out to him while he was in prison, and I didn't. Still torn on that. My son did know the victim as well, and I know the victims family was gutted, of course. I had never talked to them but did with the murderer's family. Both families lived near my mother, and that's how DS ended up hanging out with the two occationally. When I feel bad about not reaching out, I think about if it might have been DS killed in different circumstances, and it dries up my compassion.

IMHO the best place to spend money and make a huge difference is in early childhood. Ages 0 to 5 is when so much social and emotional intelligence is formed (or not). Supporting families and children during that time period esp those in poverty would have huge benefits.
Might seem to weird to throw that into a discussion about crime, but I'm convinced the two are correlated.

These are things that every woman I know does as soon as she becomes aware that the world isn't safe for her. Along with having your keys held in your fist with one of them poking out your knuckles, checking the backseats and bushes for potential assailants, resisting the urge to give in to road rage for fear of losing. And, more recently in this century, have someone on the phone while you walk to/from your car--not talking to them but just having the line open so they can hear what's going on. This world is losing its mind in so many ways and the people that thrive on hate have gotten an open invitation to be themselves. It makes me feel very impotent in the face of it all.

Three blocks from us in our little town two days ago, police from 2 towns chased a Porsche stilen from next county with 5 guys. Car entered highway at very high speed but broke down and the 5 guys bailed out into the woods. State police joined and after searching all night the 5 were caught and now jailed Police said this is a gang that has been stealing cars locally. Neighbor had his car stolen last year. His son in law is with state police and had said gangs stop at end of a block and run down the street looking for cars with keys or fobs in them. Almost 3x week NextDoor has posts from Ring doorbells of guys in middle of night walking up to car in driveway and trying to get in
This area is suburban/ rural and the guys arrested were from inner city about 10 miles away Big upscale mall has had groups of thieves go into store and almost empty store of expensive handbags. Now there are ropes across store entrances and guards only let a few into store at one time
So thefts by organized groups are becoming more common but thankfully not violence - yet Although at that mall there has been a man shot and killed in front of his wife . Thieves were waiting to hijack their expensive car and killed to take a joyride Degenerate selfish amoral people

Might seem to weird to throw that into a discussion about crime, but I'm convinced the two are correlated. I agree, but I think ending the focus at 5 would tend to diminish the positives greatly. the tween-teen years are a hard time with a driving need to connect and be like your peer groups. When we say somemthing like - especially those in poverty - why do we have poverty again? seems increasingly inane to continue our society with this level of wealth stratification. While a certain political flavor likes policies that keep the have and have nots in place, SES mobility has decreased and IMO we are moving into a technosphere where that ability to pull yourself up by your bootstraps is going to be rapidly evaporating. We are on the cusp of robotics and AI doing away with a lot of low level jobs and if we don't see that future and start to plan for it, our dystopian future will be secured. And that isn't even accounting for climate change. Basic income sounded like such a crazy idea when I first heard about it, but what will we do when Mcdonalds, Target, and Whole foods is fully robotic/AI driven? maybe just 5 actual employees store? Open 24/7 for convenience and robots never sleep......At some point, even complex tasks in medicine and engineering will be largely AI driven and robotically executed. Many foods might be 3d printed. Meat developed in the lab. We are on the cusp of a new revolution and it could be a golden age - or a dystopian nightmare with the masses unable to find work. All that said, I am looking forward to having robotic/AI household management where everything is cleaned and tidied up immediately, my clothes washed and put away, every dust speck eliminate the moment it floats onto the floor. My favorite foods prepared and served exactly how I like them, exactly when I want them, and nary a clean up to worry about. And I'm saving money accordingly! LOL - so how was that for a total sidebar? But anyhoo, totally agree with your post. The intervention should start the day of conception. Every baby is our future citizen that we all must live with. Why not give every one of them the best chance to shine, to contribute, to be happy?

Ring cameras are popular, and I wish car cameras came in protect car options not just safety while driving features. Cellphone cameras can help but are not passive recording like a civilian body cam would be. Privacy laws probably come into lay too, but I can see when at work and in life, a visual and audio recording would have been very helpful.

Less visible.

I'd love a small one like they use in police sting operations. Less visible. OTOH, a visible one would have more of a deterrent effect. I’m not sure that is true. The last time they tried to steal my next door neighbor’s car, there was a camera in plain sight on our front porch. It was aimed in a way that it would’ve caught activity in our next door neighbor’s driveway. That camera is why the police came to our house every time thieves tried to steal our next door neighbors’ vehicle. The thieves had no way of knowing that camera didn’t work. Well, it actually did work, we could tell from the green and red lights on it, but we didn’t know where the feed and what it was recording was going to, despite Mister’s efforts to try to figure it out. It has been replaced now, with a camera we have control over and can see what it records. My next door neighbors had a Ring doorbell, that is what alerted them that someone was on their front porch. That person was trying to get close enough to duplicate their key fobs for the vehicle and he was successful. They had the car door open by the time my neighbor went outside, Ring doorbell cameras and the like, are obvious, even to me. So I can only assume these criminals did not care about cameras. So imo, none of that was a deterrent to the people trying to steal the vehicle. Not even to the assholes that shot at my next door neighbor when he went outside after the alert from his Ring doorbell woke him up the last time some people were trying to steal their vehicle. Our house and the Nextdoor neighbors’ house are the only houses in our cove. We’ve both added more cameras since the incident when they shot at him. But I don’t really see the cameras as a deterrent. I see the cameras as potential help to identify suspects that commit crimes against us.
