I read with interest that one of the bodies in Lake Mead was identified with DNA. Who pays for the DNA test? A friend (P) who died in May 2021 had almost zero to no asset. We asked his friend (T) who helped him what happened. P had an anyerism while jumping in one of those trampoline places and was put on life support so the organs could be harvested. Our friend T did not know what was happening because he had driven 4 hours to see to his friend's care. T was told they were waiting for "the walk" which he had zero idea what that was and neither did P's DD.
An hour after arriving, the nurse walked up to all of the attachments to P and cut them. T was shocked. The medical people could have given some explanation or warning. T found out more about the organ removal to be done.
Who paid for P's organs to be removed? He had zero assets. I know the recipients had to pay for their transplant. Who paid for care of the remains? Maybe all of P went to science.

I think in cases like this the DNA test is paid for by the local police department handling the case or the County handling the case. It's part of their investigation and handling the "case". I'm sorry your friend had such a rough experience with the hospital at the end of his friend's life. Been thru the everything was fine - just another day - but then the world turned upside down when someone died unexpectedly. Been in that upside down world 3 times in my lifetime. The shock/numb feeling is the worst. The hospital staff and in one case the hospital chaplain were always compassionate even if the living relatives/friends gathered there all looked like deers caught in the headlights and could be barely function. I've got a lot of dead relatives. I'm generally ok with death - even my own. The out of the blue death is in it's own category of "difficult to process". Meant to add: in my densely populated urban area - there are lots of "safety nets" in place to pay for the end of life services for those who cannot pay. The County, the local cemeteries, sometimes local church groups... I think there are different parts of the government offices (police/fire/whatever) that may have some contribution to the costs. I'm guessing if the deceased is a Veteran there is some help with expenses.

I am also sorry to hear about your friend's death.
I agree with everything @tiny said. I too come from a large family and have known a lot of people who have died. Although not a lot of them donated their organs, that I know of. But I believe @tiny is correct in the information provided.
Hugs

Thank you for your condolences. I also have seen a lot of relatives/friends pass. MSN had a click through on what to say/do for someone grieving. I find the internet is listening to everything. I did share it on a family thread.

Look up Megan Devine. She is on Instagram and has at least one book. She is a grief counselor and what she says about grief speaks to me.
Pretty much everyone says the wrong thing to grieving people because they don't know better.

If you are an organ donor you aren't paying for organ removal because you are dead and getting no benefit. Not sure who pays or whether the cost might be split by the hospital and the lucky recipients of the donated organs. I feel for T, that had to be hard. As a friend who wasn't local and known to the staff, they may have not told him much because of HIPAA and perhaps the next of kin, POA, or whatever was unknown.

They told T that they had been waiting for him to get to the hospital which he is bewildered with. The hospital was open with him so he must have been an emergency contact even though he was not family.
It was really hard on T. He lost his doubles partner who was always ready to go. He has found someone but to took a year. My H and I just found out about this. You know with covid shutting everything down and everyone feel oppressed by an unseen illness.

I wonder if they were so prepared for him coming, they did tell him what was going on, but very quickly and possibly even while he was looking at his friend. Bad and unfortunate things happened during Covid. While I did not work at a hospital then, I did work at just one step down. An Assisted Living facility and short-term nursing home. Many unfortunate things happened. I have more stories than I'd like and certainly more than I'd prefer to remember. I hope T is doing better now. He is far from alone on similar experiences.

Thanks. I'm sure he's working his way through the grief process like all of us have to do.

Depending on the hospital involved, this might be what they meant by "the walk." Honor WalkThis was from a hospital in Oregon. There appear to be other hospital systems that do something similar.
