Lost my trusty black handled potato peeler. Our family is from Potato Europe - Ireland Germany and Poland - so we eat a lot of potatoes! I’m using an orange handled one right now and it does a pitiful job so I’ve resorted to a knife. A little less pitiful but wasteful. Don’t know brand name of the good black peeler
Any recommendations greatly appreciated!
I’m no longer eating potatoes at every meal but most. On a trip to Ireland once went to a pizza shop and along with the slice of pizza got - a boiled potato!!

Jewel-OXO? i think it is a specialty regional retailer, tg.
note to this thread: potato peelers are weirdly hard to find in QUALITY. the typical ones work about as well as butter knives. Williams Sonoma has overpriced stuff that generally works, however.

Have you asked your family members? I probably wouldn't know a good potato peeler, if I had one.

We have some from Tupperware that we like. Idk, I think I had an Orange one, c/b the one you don't like is from Tupperware?
I have 2 or 3 or maybe even 4. I rarely peel potatoes, my DH usually does it. I just track down the tools he wants.

I love the OXO swivel peeler and it gets real workout here for carrots, mangoes, turnips, ginger and more. Yes, everything but potatoes which we never peel The handle is really comfortable and the grooves make it easy to grasp when your hands are damp and slippery.

txbo ! Good to "see" you again. Good to see you are still here. How is the family? I've been on another board for a while. Nothing much has changed for us and been retired for 30 years now.

We're good. Oldest is a Jr in college studying aerospace engineering, youngest just starting 7th grade. I plan to retire a couple months after he graduates high school. 2167 more days.

Personally, I use a very sharp paring knife from Solingen, Germany. None of my other knives do the job.

My go to peeler is an OXO good grips peeler. does potatoes, carrots, and broccoli (if you need to whittle down the "trunk" part some before cooking) and makes peeling tough skinned winter squash easy (Butternut, kobacha, red Kuri). When I get winter squash I'm usually cleaning and freezing up to 20 pounds of it - so I'm peeling 6 to 7 squashes in an evening. the OXO is easy on my hand. If you prefer the other style of peeler, I have heard nothing but "best ever!" first hand accounts of this style (I think the long handled peeler worked better for the people with bigger hands): Rada Cutlery R141 Deluxe Vegetable Peeler with Aluminum Handle I have not tried a Rada Style peeler mostly because I've NEVER been able to get that style of peeler to actually peel - it's uncomfortable to use (and I can't seem to get it to peel). It brings back so-so childhood memories: I still can hear my mom yelling at me because I obviously don't want to help because I can't seem to peel the "carrots" with that style peeler - she would grab it from me and whip thru peeling the carrots. After she passed I was revisiting childhood "trauma" and attempted to learn to use that style of peeler. My brain can NOT coordinate my hands to use that sort of peeler in a comfortable, sustainable way. So, sorry ghost of mom - you'll just have to watch me peel stuff with an OXO good grips - and deal with the fact that I wasn't "lazy or out to annoy you" back then. I also can't seem to use the "D" shaped peelers when I've tried to help friends while doing group cooking. All of that said - I think we all should be able to use the style and type of peeler that works best for our brain/hand coordination level. It's an individual thing: The 'best peeler' is the one that is comfortable to use and peels for you. ** I would avoid OXO style peelers with a ceramic blade - I haven't had much long term luck with them (and they failed the peeling a Squash test.

I bought a peeler for carrots. I couln't get it to peel. Evidently, I was peeling in the wrong direction. I was peeling away from me, but it works quite well, if you peel towards you.

not that brand, but I have one with that orientation, I prefer the ones that are long rather than wide.

I tried a peeler at my sister's house once (she'd already claimed the only paring knife in her kitchen) and almost inadvertently slit my wrists with it.

I was confused, too. The years refers to years only vegetable was the homemade potato chips but what does a Spanish restaurant have to do with a vegetable peeler? I mean, if it's a private joke, that's fine my family has those, too. it just didn't make any sense with you asking about black-handled peelers.

Told family I lost potato peeler (doesn’t matter about color) . Joke - son said he saw it on table of the restaurant where we had family party on Saturday . We’ve all been going to these Spanish/Portuguese restaurants for years. Only vegetable usually served is homemade potato chips

I think it's all about getting the angle right when peeling. Most of my friends (and SIL's peel "away" rather than "to". ) with an OXO style peeler I can peel to and away and I can even switch hands and peel with my left hand. I've never tried peeling "to" with my left hand. I usually only switch hands when doing a big batch of squash cause my right hand/arm gets tired so I only do part of a squash lefty before switching back to righty. It's really all about practice and then muscle memory and what's comfortable.

My best peeler is a Pampered Chef model from 15 or 20 years ago.
My mom has the Rada peeler.
