Hi, I’m trying to help my daughter with this. She is 23, and didn’t qualify under my policy at the time because she wasn’t a full time student. She is starting back in college this fall, but plans to continue with her own policy. She purchased an insurance policy through healthcare.gov young adult policy, since she didn’t qualify for insurance through her work because she didn’t get enough hours.
Unbeknownst to me she missed a payment, her policy lapsed and she didn’t admit this to me til several months later. I’m trying to help her get some sort of coverage until open enrollment in November but it seems every company tells her to wait until open enrollment. What can she do in the meantime? We have spent so much time trying to figure this out!

The ACA requires insurance companies to cover till age 26. They do not need to be a full time student to be covered

But I can ask DD’s dad to add her to his policy, thanks!

My oldest son turned 26 in March when he was in his last year of Medical School. The school told him to go to the exchange because it was less than the school policy, so that may also be an option if your state is one with a good exchange. Lastly, if they expanded Medicaid, if she is a full-time student, she may also qualify that way.

You should also see if her school offers health insurance, too. That's how I got insurance after I wasn't covered on my parents policy. It was like $800 for the year, and provided access to some of the top medical facilities in the state.

Health insurance is so stressful! But yes, at 23 she should automatcally be covered under yours or her dad's policy. My DD#1 is 24; she has her own health insurance through her job. She married last summer, so she is also on her husband's plan. She still gets to be on both mine and my husband's plans!

She is checking with her dad, he has Tricare so hopefully she can be added to his policy, even if she isn’t living with him.

She graduated earlier this year. So not old info. If she's a student, she can get it.

Thank you, guys, DD is now insured through young adult policy with her dad’s Tricare! Im embarrassed to admit that this was such a confusing process for me. 😳 Now I’m just relieved she is insured again.
