I was reading that earlier, and my first thought was "dafuq". So, can kidnappers now claim that they did not take a child, they just relocated them involuntarily? And I thought Texas liked giving world the image that they are tough, real men there. Sounds like they are raising a bunch of snowflakes, that may feel "discomfort" hearing about what their ancestors did to entire races. I also read THIS article about a school district in Wisconsin that refused to add a book to the curriculum about Japanese internment during WW11 that was written by a woman whose had been held in one in Utah, because it offered an "unbalanced" account of historical events. I applaud the parent on the last line. A point that a lot of people made was how Germans did not receive the same treatment.

When I was young, I had to listen to English-language North Korean broadcasts on short-wave to get a taste of what propaganda and state-controlled speech sounded like. Maybe Texas is incredibly progressive by making the same thing mandatory instead of something that I did when I was crushingly bored.

And remember when reading Anne Frank's diary you should also get the balanced perspective of the Nazi's views when they raided her attic. thehill.com/homenews/state-watch/576890-texas-school-leader-tells-teachers-to-balance-holocaust-books-with/“Just try to remember the concepts of [House Bill] 3979,” Peddy said during the meeting, referring to a new Texas law that requires educators to present multiple viewpoints for “widely debated and currently controversial” issues, NBC reported. “And make sure that if you have a book on the Holocaust,” Peddy continued, “that you have one that has an opposing, that has other perspectives.” “How do you oppose the Holocaust?” one teacher asked. “Believe me, that’s come up,” Peddy said. Can we sell Texas back to Mexico or are they not going to want it? If they take it I am willing to do a complete 180 on building a wall.

How about another perspective of the Trail of Tears - Andrew Jackson, being a good businessman, realized seizing the cultivated Cherokee land and their farm houses was way cheaper than purchasing the land or creating new homesteads from scratch. He generously shared these plum farms with all his friends. The Cherokees living on the farms were granted free trips out West to attractive desert properties known for their beautiful bare landscapes.

On Twitter last night, librarians were discussing book challenges - they were adamant that any group deciding on whether to ban a book, or not, had to actually READ that book before making a decision. Read the whole book, every member of the group, because it's way too easy for an excerpt to be taken out of context.

Sanity rules...for now. But don't hold your breath. Texas board of education strikes down proposal to call slavery ‘involuntary relocation'A proposal by Texas state educators to call slavery "involuntary relocation" in second grade classes has been rejected by the State Board of Education. The proposal, first reported by the Texas Tribune, was introduced at the board's June 15 meeting. Throughout the summer, the board will consider several curriculum updates to comply with lawmakers' requirements to keep subjects that make students uncomfortable out of schools. I read that same article about the Otsuka book in WI. between this, the quote I just read from Gaetz in an article Tennesseer posted, and some of the bullshit that's landed in my inbox in the last week in response to the Dobbs decision...I just can't with the willful ignorance of some people anymore. 🤦♀️

Sorry, I've only seen the movie. I HAVE read the Tom Sawyer & Huckleberry Finn books, which are considered "non-PC". What sort of fiction did they sneak into the Gone with the Wind book? That the slaves were happy? (Just a guess...)

Just like family. So, so happy. 🙄

My nephew actually teaches in the Wisconsin School District, I was going to ask him about it, but I did not think about it yesterday. It is one of the best districts in the state academically. When I read about the school boards objections to the book, they were that it was being selected for an AP class. The particular subject was already covered in another book the class would read, and they thought it was better if they chose a book with a different subject. Also the book was poetry based and hard to understand, and one of the big reasons not selecting it was that it was not on a list of books recommended for AP classes. So, if one reviews the whole reasons for the decision, (to me), it appears the school board was making an appropriate decision. I was initially against this decision, but after I read the explanation, it seemed reasonable to me.
