Well, our balances have officially declined by the amounts we need for four years of currrent living expenses so far this year. This does not include what we have pulled out of the accounts this year.
IS anyone having a similar experience? Is there anything you are doing to stem the destruction, or just hanging in and hoping for a recovery at this point?
Our personal stock portfolio is being currently held up via oil and utility stocks, but they started taking a hit the last ten days also.

We are discussing selling a stock to hold us to the end of the year so we stop draing the IRA'S even more, but then se lower our dividend income.........creating a higher need to withdraw from retirement accounts in future years.

I'm just hanging in there and continuing my scheduled buying.
I would love to buy some ibonds while the interest rate is so high, but we are still dumping a lot of money into home renovations so I don't have much to spare for new investments. If the market were good, I would sell some mutual funds to pay for the renovations, but I am trying to cash flow them so I don't lock in any losses.

Our portfolio is down 18%. We don't need any money now. I'm putting off taking our RMD's hoping the market is up some first. I know I can't time it though.

I am down an amount that would pay for all of my necessary expenses for about 12-15 years, or all of my planned spending for about seven. I'm not doing anything about it because I don't need to. I don't need additional money to live on and am years away from RMDs so don't worry at all about selling in a down market. It will recover again, and I will go from being fine and in really good shape to being back in great shape.

That us kind of where I am, except I don't need to withdraw until next year. Due to an unexpected high cash reserve (I had no time to research investing that money last year) I won't need the money at that time either. So if the market is still or even more down at that time I will take distributions in kind to a taxable account and eat the tax hit. My small pension and SS cover over 85% of my expenses so the big hit to the cash will be inflation. ETA: I did put rhe max for the year in iBonds but that is all I have changed. If interest on those keeps high I will do the same jn January

I’m not looking at mine for a while.
It will make me want to cash out my 401k and hide it in my mattress, which is the worst thing I can do.
The value of my house, however, has increased significantly in the last year or so. So I think about that instead.

Also down expenses for about 3 years but fortunately I use other than IRAs for expenses. But will need to take RMDs by year end. I’m on the board of a charity snd we’re hoping to get a signed contract to do renovations on a vacant building .if the contract is signed by year end, I will donate the RMD s to the board

The value of my house, however, has increased significantly in the last year or so. So I think about that instead. I think the values of our homes are topping out. Both of ours have not increased in three weeks on zillow. In fact the Florida home is down $2,300, but that is mostly because there are no homes on the market in our area, and the ones selling right now are gut jobs, so sq.ft. pricing is lower on these homes. Before June the homes were going up every ten days or so. Number of Homes on market are still not very large here in Indiana or in Florida in our neighborhoods. Our mistake on money is we put everything into "things". Homes stocks, etc, and do not have an emergency fund. I am trying to change that by talking the wife into selling the campground lot with the park model trailer. Lots with trailers or park models have gone from around $25,000 to $40,000 and up in two years. Newer units with a lot pushing $65,000 and up.
